From Harper's BAZAAR

Category is...independence! Individuality! Originality! Full-tilt, dressed-to-the-hilt, one-of-a-kind, feisty, fiery, unfettered fabulosity! This year, for her annual Harper's BAZAAR Icons portfolio, Global Fashion Director Carine Roitfeld celebrates some of the cultural forces who rewrote all the rules. They've resisted expectations, rejected the acceptable, and broken through every boundary that stood in their way. Whether they're models redefining the rules of beauty, like Alek Wek and Kate Moss; actors who bring powerful new stories to the screen, like Regina King and Awkwafina; activists who refuse to sit idle, like Christy Turlington; or musicians whose personas on- and off-stage give voice to legions, like Celine Dion and cover star Alicia Keys—the 2019 #BAZAARICONS are like no other. "There is nothing more iconic than being singular," says Roitfeld. "No one before you or after—and no copycats.”

To celebrate our inimitable icons, we invited some of the world's top models, artists, and personalities to the Plaza Hotel on the eve of New York Fashion Week to strike a pose, strut like they own the dance floor, and light up the party with the full wattage of their own singular personalities. Inspired by the ballroom culture of the ‘70s and ‘80s, this year’s #BAZAARICONS party invited the best and brightest stars to show aaaall the way up.

With BAZAAR's Royal Tea host Rickey Thompson acting as the master of ceremonies, the electricity was crackling. Keys, the night's performer, stopped by to celebrate with Roitfeld. Ball culture fixture and multidisciplinary artist Kia LaBeija, Mother of the Royal House of LaBeija, was on hand as movement director to guide partygoers into their truest selves under the white-hot lights. Indya Moore, star of FX's Pose, served across-the-board 10s alongside costar Dyllón Burnside, Pose runway choreographer Twiggy Pucci Gar?on, and iconic emcee and ballroom historian Jack Mizrahi. Janelle Monae mesmerized. Janet Mock hypnotized. Tiffany Haddish turned it up to 11. Troye Sivan smoldered. Shailene Woodley wowed. Normani slayed. BAZAAR Icon Alek Wek and fellow models Candice Huffine, Coco Rocha, Halima Aden, Precious Lee, Winnie Harlow and more transformed the party room into their own personal runways.

Welcome to #HouseofIcons. Fashion Week is burning, and we're not stopping until we set the world on fire.
