In a new Instagram video, Dr. Pimple Popper—aka, dermatologist and TLC host Dr. Sandra Lee, MD—tackles two different types of skin concerns, showing her impressive skill range. From soft skin tags to chunky cysts, there’s seemingly nothing Dr. Lee can’t tackle.
In the clip, Dr. Lee first snips off a skin tag right under a patient’s arm. The procedure is surprisingly simple, even in the delicate area, taking virtually no time at all. A skin tag is a small piece of soft, hanging skin that is actually a tiny, benign skin tumor.
The next procedure is a little more intricate, with Dr. Lee using a surgical punch to reach a deeply embedded cyst. Once the derm punches a hole in the middle of the cyst, Dr. Lee is able to squeeze a long tube of contents from the growth, draining the mass of its chunky insides. Dr. Lee tells the patient that this cyst is an epidermoid cyst, which contains a collection of wet dead skin cells and keratin.
In the comments of clips like this, fans often write that the infamous punch tool used looks too harsh on the skin. But in the comments of a recent clip, Dr. Lee explained why she sometimes uses this tool for removals.
“If it is smaller and deeper under the skin, I use the punch,” she writes. “For bigger pops, I use the scalpel. At the end of the day, I want to make sure that I can create the cleanest suture and the smallest, if any, scar for that area.”
