How to Watch Every 2024 Oscar Nominee (Including the Shorts)
Bright an early on Jan. 23, 2024, 53 new movies were given the prestigious title "Oscar Nominee." From big-budget studio films like Barbie and superhero movies like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to international dramas like Perfect Days and short films like The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, the nominees ran the gamut of what cinema has to offer.
With the nominees announced and the Oscars ceremony not until March 10, 2024, that gives you more than a month to watch as many of the nominated movies as possible. The only tricky part is tracking them down. What's in theaters? What's on Netflix? Which shorts are only available on The New York Times website, and which movies aren't available at all? Plus, over the coming weeks, many of the nominees are likely to switch things up as they aim to be seen by as many people as possible in this lucrative window.
To help you out with your Oscar movie viewings, we've put together a list of exactly where you can watch every single nominee, and we'll be updating it regularly until the Academy Awards, so that you can check back and see if something new has arrived to a streaming service near you.

Nominations Received: One — Best Documentary Feature
What It's About: A team of journalists trapped in Ukraine as the invasion by Russia begins.
Oscar Chances: Without any heavy hitters in the mix, the documentary race is pretty wide open. The timeliness of 20 Days, however, could push it to a win.

The ABCs of Book Banning
Nominations Received: One — Best Documentary Short
What It's About: A 100-year-old woman takes on the Florida Public Schools as they begin to ban books.
Oscar Chances: Since the shorts races have gained relatively little attention up until now, we won't be assessing their chances at winning an Oscar.

Nominations Received: One — Best Live Action Short
What It's About: David Oyelowo stars in this short about a ride share driver who must come to terms with a violent crime he witnesses.

American Fiction
Nominations Received: Five — Best Picture, Actor (Jeffrey Wright), Supporting Actor (Sterling K. Brown), Adapted Screenplay and Original Score
What It's About: An academic novelist decides to write a "Black" book in order to become more successful, while also grieving losses within his own family.
Oscar Chances: While the nominations are mostly the wins for American Fiction, there is definitely an opening in Adapted Screenplay as this script is much more clever and writerly than those of its competitors.

Nominations Received: One — Best Original Song ("It Never Went Away")
What It's About: A year in the life of musician Jon Batiste.
Oscar Chances: Since it's up against the Barbie songs, a win seems unlikely.

Neon
Anatomy of a Fall
Nominations Received: Five — Best Picture, Director, Actress (Sandra Huller), Original Screenplay and Film Editing
What It's About: A child finds his father's dead body outside of his house. Did he jump? Did he fall? Or was he pushed? A French legal thriller ensues.
Oscar Chances: Like American Fiction, Anatomy doesn't seem to be a strong contender in most of its categories, but the writerly script could allow those who love the movie to honor it there.

The Barber of Little Rock
Nominations Received: One — Best Documentary Short
What It's About: Barber Arlo Washington of Little Rock, Arkansas develops a nonprofit community bank and completely new approach to the concept of banking.
How to Watch: The New Yorker

Barbie
Nominations Received: Eight — Best Picture, Supporting Actress (America Ferrera), Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, Production Design and Original Song ("I'm Just Ken" and "What Was I Made For?")
What It's About: This Barbie starts thinking about death and so wanders into the human world where she learns about anxiety, sexual harassment and the patriarchy.
Oscar Chances: With Barbie missing out on some key nominations, it seems weaker in Best Picture than was originally thought. However, it could definitely win Oscars in Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, Production Design and Original Song for a nice haul.

Bobi Wine: The People's President
Nominations Received: One — Best Documentary Feature
What It's About: Activist and musician Bobi Wine runs against Uganda's authoritarian President Yoweri Museveni in their 2021 presidential election.
Oscar Chances: With the backing of National Geographic and Disney, this doc could pull forward in a wide open field.
How to Watch: Disney+
Studio Ghibli
The Boy and the Heron
Nominations Received: One — Best Animated Feature
What It's About: After the death of his mother, a young boy is swept up into a magical dream world by a heron.
Oscar Chances: Strong. It's basically a two-film race between this and Across the Spider-Verse. The Boy and the Heron could be aided by the fact another Spider-Verse movie is coming this year while Hayao Miyazaki may never complete another film.
How to Watch: In theaters
Warner Bros.
The Color Purple
Nominations Received: One — Best Supporting Actress (Danielle Brooks)
What It's About: A musical adaptation of the Alice Walker novel that focuses on Black women in the south standing up for themselves and creating better lives than those given to them by horrible men.
Oscar Chances: Danielle Brooks seems unlikely to skirt by Da'Vine Joy Randolph, who has won nearly every prize available to her this year.

The Creator
Nominations Received: Two — Best Sound and Visual Effects
What It's About: A sci-fi epic about a human vs. A.I. war in which a special forces agent must hunt down and kill "the creator," a weapon developed by the A.I.
Oscar Chances: The Creator seems unlikely to beat the likes of Oppenheimer and Zone of Interest in Sound, but it could take home the win in Visual Effects.

El Conde
Nominations Received: One — Best Cinematography
What It's About: Real-life horrific Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet was actually an eternal bloodthirsty vampire who has tormented the world as a series of merciless war lords for centuries. Now he's old and hiding out in Patagonia post his latest "death."
Oscar Chances: While El Conde's cinematography is stunning, it seems unlikely that it will be the juggernaut Best Picture nominees its up against here.
How to Watch: Netflix

Nominations Received: One — Best Animated Feature
What It's About: A fire girl falls in love with a water boy, which is sort of problematic for obvious reasons in an element-based world.
Oscar Chances: Since Elemental's reviews were not strong, it seems unlikely it will overtake the frontrunners.

MTV Documentary Films
The Eternal Memory
Nominations Received: One — Best Documentary Feature
What It's About: A Chilean actress and her journalist husband set out to continue calling out the atrocities of the authoritarian Pinochet government, even while he is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
Oscar Chances: Like I've said, the Documentary Feature race is pretty up for grabs.
How to Watch: Paramount+
Hulu
Flamin' Hot
Nominations Received: One — Best Original Song ("The Fire Inside")
What It's About: The Frito Lay worker who came up with the idea for Flamin' Hot Cheetos.
Oscar Chances: Slim to none against the Barbie songs, even though this is Diane Warren's 15th nomination in this category.
How to Watch: Hulu and Disney+

Four Daughters
Nominations Received: One — Best Documentary Feature
What It's About: After two of her daughters disappear to become Islamic extremists, a Tunisian mother and a documentarian hire actresses to fill their places.
Oscar Chances: It's really anyone's game in Best Doc.
How to Watch: Video on demand
Toho
Godzilla Minus One
Nominations Received: One — Best Visual Effects
What It's About: Godzilla stars wreaking havoc in post-WWII Japan, with a small group of ex-military members attempting to destroy him through makeshift means.
Oscar Chances: People LOVE Godzilla Minus One, so if enough Academy members watch this movie, it could win based on sheer popularity alone, especially against four underwhelming competitors.
How to Watch: In theaters

Golda
Nominations Received: One — Best Makeup & Hairstyling
What It's About: The life of Israel's former Prime Minister Golda Meir.
Oscar Chances: Slim given that it's up against three Best Picture nominees and given the state of the Israel/Palestine conflict at the moment.
How to Watch: Showtime
Disney/Marvel
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Nominations Received: One — Best Visual Effects
What It's About: Superheroes in outer space.
Oscar Chances: While the Marvel movie certainly boasts some fancy special effects, Marvel fatigue and several more popular competitors makes me guess this won't end up winning.
How to Watch: Disney+
Focus Features
The Holdovers
Nominations Received: Five — Best Picture, Actor (Paul Giamatti), Supporting Actress (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), Original Screenplay and Film Editing
What It's About: A crotchety old teacher and a feisty young whippersnapper are stranded together at a boarding school over the holidays. Will they teach each other a lesson? Almost certainly.
Oscar Chances: Both Giamatti and Randolph have bagged wins already this awards season, and if the Academy loves this movie, we could see it nabbing Screenplay as well. It would have to fend off Poor Things and Oppenheimer to take Best Picture/Editing, but this could be the sentimental favorite of the year and fare well with ranked choice voting.
How to Watch: Peacock
Paramount Pictures
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Nominations Received: One — Best Original Score
What It's About: Indiana Jones is old now, but he's still got it. Also there's time traveling.
Oscar Chances: Very unlikely.

What It's About: A boy, who spends the weekend away from a youth incarceration center with his family, is desperate not to return.

What It's About: Two Senegalese refuges attempt to flee to Italy on a long epic quest to find a better life.
Oscar Chances: Unfortunately for the other competitors, The Zone of Interest seems unstoppable in this category.

Nominations Received: One — Best Documentary Short
What It's About: An examination of the relationship between China and Taiwan focusing on Taiwanese islands just off the coast of China.

Killers of the Flower Moon
Nominations Received: Ten — Best Picture, Director, Actress (Lily Gladstone), Supporting Actor (Robert De Niro), Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Production Design, Original Score and Original Song ("Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)")
What It's About: Based on the bestselling book by David Grann, it details the systematic killing of the Osage Nation for their oil money.
Oscar Chances: This is really a toss up, because while Killers earned a slew of nominations, I struggle to see an easy path to victory in any category and I worry it could be this year's The Fabelmans or The Irishman, ending up with no wins despite plenty of noms. Lily Gladstone is perhaps the most likely win (if she can overtake Emma Stone), but otherwise, Killers is really going to need Oppenheimer to falter.

What It's About: Two old men help one another deal with grief in this Danish comedy.

What It's About: Long after the Holocaust, a survivor reads a letter dedicated to a pig who saved his life.

Nominations Received: Seven — Best Picture, Actress (Carey Mulligan), Actor (Bradley Cooper), Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Makeup & Hairstyling and Sound
What It's About: The lives of Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre, who had a very interesting relationship given that Bernstein was gay.
Oscar Chances: We could perhaps see a Makeup & Hairstyling and/or Sound win here, but I think that's about it.

What It's About: A fictionalization of the Mary Kay Letourneau case in which an actress goes to visit an older woman and her much younger husband in order to play her in a film adaptation.
Oscar Chances: Since May December did so poorly with nominations, I think its highly unlikely that it wins this category.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning

What It's About: Tom Cruise running and saving the world yet again.
Oscar Chances: Best Sound seems unlikely, but a weak Visual Effects crowd could give it an opportunity to win.

What It's About: Director Sean Wang creates a portrait of his two grandmothers.

What It's About: Napoleon.

What It's About: It's a biopic of Diana Nyad, who swam from Cuba to Florida at age 64 in an epic feat of endurance.
Oscar Chances: It's highly unlikely that either of the Nyad actresses win.

Oppenheimer
Nominations Received: Thirteen — Best Picture, Director, Actor (Cillian Murphy), Supporting Actress (Emily Blunt), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup & Hairstyling, Production Design, Original Score and Sound
What It's About: The life, work and regret of atomic bomb creator J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Oscar Chances: As the frontrunner, it would be silly to count Oppenheimer out of pretty much any of its categories. It seems likely to win Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Cinematography, Film Editing, Original Score and Sound, with others slightly more competitive. Supporting Actress, Costume Design, and Makeup & Hairstyling seem like the most likely losses, but who knows. Frontrunners also don't always stay in that place so keep an eye out for Poor Things and The Holdovers which are certainly looking to steal some awards from Oppy.

Oscar Chances: Perhaps the one benefit of getting so few nominations is that everyone who loves Past Lives will be voting for it in Screenplay, which could help its chances of beating out competitors that could win elsewhere.

What It's About: A Tokyo public bathrooms janitor drives around the city listening to music and contemplating life.
Oscar Chances: While Perfect Days is one of the year's best films, I just can't see it overtaking The Zone of Interest here.

What It's About: The brain of a child is put into the body of a woman in this feminist Frankenstein reimagining.
Oscar Chances: Poor Things is sitting pretty in second place at the moment. While there is a world in which it leaves with zero Oscars, it could also surge in the coming weeks and yank a number of these trophies out of Oppenheimer's hands.

What It's About: Brittany Snow plays a young mother who must travel from Arkansas to Illinois with her daughter in order to get an abortion.

What It's About: A dog and a robot become besties in 1980s New York.
Oscar Chances: Unlikely to win in a category with two strong frontrunners.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

What It's About: Spider-Man gets involved with a multiverse full of Spider-beings, but when he thinks he's trying to help, he might actually be causing more trouble.
Oscar Chances: It's really a two film race between Spider-Man and The Boy and the Heron. The question is if Spider-Man's upcoming sequel hurts it with voters who want to reward something else now.

What It's About: A teacher just trying to do her best is driven to her wits end by students, parents and fellow faculty members.

What It's About: The daily life of the Nazi commandant who runs Auschwitz and his family.
Oscar Chances: It will almost certainly with Best International Feature. I think it has a chance at Sound as well, given how that is utilized in the movie.
