True crime fans, you'll definitely want to stick around for this one. Netflix is releasing a brand new documentary that tells a horrifyingly true story of dozens of routine in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures gone bad.
The film, called Our Father, unpacks the case of Dr. Donald Cline. For years, Cline secretly fathered dozens of his IVF patients' children—and was only caught when one of those children attempted to connect with her half-siblings.
Jacoba Ballard decided to take a DNA test one day, in hopes of finding one or two half-siblings with the same sperm donor. "Growing up, I felt different," she says in the documentary's trailer. But when she found seven matches, she realized that she had stumbled across a major discovery.
Not only did she have new relatives to reach out to, but in the film's synopsis, Netflix notes that the number "defied best practices in fertility medicine." A shocking question began to form: Did Dr. Cline inseminate his patients with his own sperm for decades without their knowledge or consent?
"That's when strange things started happening," Jacoba says.
"Dr. Cline was the best infertility doctor in Indianapolis," another voice explains in the trailer. Once a celebrated figure in the local community, Dr. Cline quickly became the subject of a large investigation, headed by Jacoba. The documentary follows her journey to find as many of her half-siblings as she can and bring Dr. Cline to justice.
It's no easy task. As one man states in the trailer, there was no legal precedent or law that addressed Cline's actions. And although Cline tries to convince Jacoba to end her investigation, she says, "I'll never back down. I will fight to expose all of your secrets."
The documentary's first eerie trailer just dropped, featuring Jacoba and many of her half-siblings. (The official count seems to total upwards of 90). Here's an exclusive sneak peek at Our Father:
And stay tuned—the full documentary premieres on Netflix on Wednesday, May 11.
