Watch: Italo Ferreira Pulls (Probably) First-Ever Surf Trick in Wavepool

Aside from being a world champion and Olympic gold medalist surfer, Italo Ferreira is, more than likely, one of the most energetic surfers on the planet.

Even on lay days, when the World Surf League calls off competition and most surfers use the time to relax and prepare, Italo is still going, still surfing, still finding something to do. Like a little Brazilian energizer bunny, hopped up on Red Bull.

So, recently, during down days on the Hawaiian leg of the Tour, Italo has been sampling the goods at The Lineup at Wai Kai – a 100-foot wide standing wavepool. And during those sessions, he pulled off perhaps something never been done before.

Italo starts at one end of the wave, hops on his board, launches an air, then jumps on a barrier in the middle of the wave, grabs another board, then acid drops into the other side of the wave. There’s definitely some skate influence going on here.

In the comments, and poorly translated from Portuguese, Italo wrote:

“Guys, this foam that's close to the point is not enough to project me up. It would have to be a ramp with more walls, then I could make it. Who knows in the next one, the challenge will be there ?? & I don't like it a bit.”

Presumably, what he’s trying to say here, is that he wanted to do an air completely clearing the barrier in the middle, then landing on the other side. But the wave doesn’t have a sufficient ramp for such a lofty punt. At least…not yet.

Maybe in the future?
