Watch Nine Minutes of Epic Surfing in John John Florence's Ode to Hale'iwa

The North Shore's Ali'i Beach Park, aka Hale'iwa (house of the 'iwa bird), is home to a wave that grows with local surfers through their stages of life and surfing.

Unlike Pipeline, it's not a wave they charge once they've proven themselves as total badasses. Toddlers start out surfing inside Hale'iwa, compete in the annual kids Menehune Contest, and slowly paddle farther outside over the years.

John John Florence's latest release below is an ode to Hale'iwa, a spot that he and his friends have grown up surfing. Their love for the wave is clear in the film.

Florence captioned the edit above:

"Hale'iwa has always been one of my favorite waves.

"It's pretty fun to think back on surfing heats at the Menehune Contest with the same friends I surf with today.

"Thanks to Joel Centeio for being a part of this, and the rest of the community at Ali'i Beach Park. Thanks also to the cinematographers who supported and sent in clips of everyone."
