Don’t ever doubt Olivia Rodrigo knows how to commit to the bit. During an electrifying performance of “Vampire” at the 2024 Grammys, she smeared a tasteful dollop of (fake) blood down her cheek and chest as the backdrop behind her gushed (CGI) gore. In—what else?—a blood-red silk gown, the six-time Grammy nominee kept her rendition stripped-down and raw with minimal choreography, though no less emotional energy than her fans have come to expect.

At this year’s Grammys, Rodrigo is nominated for: Record of the Year (“Vampire”), Album of the Year (Guts), Best Pop Vocal Album (Guts), Song of the Year (“Vampire”), Best Pop Solo Performance (“Vampire”), and Best Rock Song (“Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl”). She spoke to Variety in late November about Guts’ success and her songwriting, saying, “When I write, my goal is to capture the essence of what I’m feeling in a way that’s going to be poignant and concise. On Guts, I felt I had a lot I wanted to get off of my chest—the shame and embarrassment and regrets. All feelings that are hard to externalize in everyday life but I think this record gave me an outlet to process them… It was a very important album for me to write as Olivia the person.”

She also shared what she hopes listeners take away from her music generally: “Honest songwriting,” she said. “It’s what I’ve gravitated towards my whole life—music that helps you process what you’re feeling or comforts you when you’re feeling these big feelings. It’s just nice to know that someone else is experiencing them. It makes you feel less alone.”
