What to Watch: Supersized Beauty: How Hair, Nails and Eyes Are Getting a Bold Makeover
LONDON — The Apple TV+’s docuseries “The Super Models,” which dives into the rise of Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington, out on Sept. 20, is driving the return of supersized beauty.
Think big hair, bold nails and XL sunglasses.

Hair volume products are up 30 percent year-over-year in the U.K., according to beauty retailer Space NK; meanwhile, searches for hair volume on TikTok have surpassed 220 million.
“I think during any economic crisis hair is actually the one thing people still invest in. I guess much like red lipstick ruled during the war, that one investment in your hair seems to make more of a difference than a new dress or new shoes,” said celebrity hairstylist Larry King, who has two busy salons in London’s Notting Hill and South Kensington.
He lists big bouncy blow dries, brushed out voluminous curls, liquid hair (styled with high shine and a healthy finish) and solid luxe colors as incoming trends.
This summer, King launched Spoilt for Choice, a hair oil with rosemary that can be used as a mask and styling product.
Sam McKnight, the man behind Princess Diana’s short, slicked-back hairstyle of the ‘90s, agrees that bigger hair is on the horizon.
He said it’s a result of coming out of the pandemic that has driven this trend with many clients “wanting more variations.”
McKnight is launching more products into his roster with a three step hair care ritual designed to add 30 percent more volume to hair. It includes a Cool Girl Volume Cleanse, Volume Nourish and Bigger Love Treatment Mask.
Famed makeup artist Bobbi Brown, who has a slightly different outlook on glamour, is tapping into the beauty of boldness with the launch of a new brow gel for her brand Jones Road with the help of Brooke Shields’ daughter Grier Henchy.
“I don’t see people wanting to go back to glamour, but people do want to be put together. Eyebrows are really important because they really do help frame the face and a put together brow makes you look really polished,” she said.
In the eyewear market, Linda Farrow’s oversize frames account for around 25 percent of their sales seasonally with this year’s numbers rising up to 35 percent according to Simon Jablon, owner and creative director of the brand that his mother set up in the ‘70s.
“As oversize frames are so part of our brand DNA they always account for around 25 percent of our sunglass sales seasonally and this year alone we are seeing them account for around 35 percent,” Jablon said.
For Daisy Kalnina, founder of The GelBottle Inc., nails during economic crises are seen as “a necessity and also an affordable luxury.”
Her fall 2023 range has been inspired by glamour with “vibrant, enigmatic and stand out from the crowd nail looks,” featuring mermaid blue nails to deep crimson hues.
