The 1989 classic The Little Mermaid is getting the live-action treatment with Halle Bailey starring as the beloved mermaid Ariel. Director Rob Marshall announced in 2019 that the singer had been tapped to play the Disney Princess in the reimagining of the animated flick.
In a statement, the filmmaker said (via Variety), “After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role."
The Little Mermaid tells the story of Ariel, a mermaid who longs to be part of the human world and ends up making a deal with an evil sea witch to experience life out of the sea.

Will there be new music in The Little Mermaid remake?
Viewers can expect fan-favorite songs from the original movie, in addition to four new songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken, won two Academy Awards for the music in the animated movie. Speaking to Variety in 2022, Miranda said, "We wrote three or four original tunes, replacing none of the ones you like. All of those are in. There’s no bigger ‘Little Mermaid’ fan than me. We found a couple of opportunities for some other music that I can’t wait to see.”
Is there a trailer for The Little Mermaid?
Walt Disney Studios released the first full-length trailer for the new musical during the 95th annual Oscars on March 12. The trailer for the live-action remake showcased Bailey's voice singing the iconic Little Mermaid song "Part of Your World."
The trailer followed the official teaser trailer for the musical that was released back in September of 2022.
A new look at the film was shared a 100 days ahead of the film's theatrical release. The 30-second video gave viewers a look at Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.
