Payne’s Sandwich Shop & Soda Fountain:

The first stop was a family-owned establishment in the heart of Scottsboro that has been in business for over 150 years.

Payne’s Sandwich Shop & Soda Fountain is off East Laurel Street in Scottsboro. Before becoming the sandwich shop, Payne’s was a local drugstore. In the 1940s the store was transformed from a drugstore to the local food favorite you see today!

When you through the doors you are taken back to the 1950s, between the wall decor and the diner look.

The slaw dog, banana split, and the rueben are just a few of the favorites owner Lisa Garrett recommends! The shop is open Monday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Scottsboro Jackson Heritage Center:

The second stop was the Scottsboro Heritage Center just around the corner from Payne;’s Sandwich Shop & Soda Fountain.

Since 1985 the center has been dedicated to representing the rich history, traditions, customs, and art of Jackson County. The center is home to the Brown-Proctor House, Sagetown, and the Exhibit Hall.

Sagetown will take you back to pioneer days, with the original log structures dating back to the early 1800s. The original courthouse was transported to the heritage center location in 1980 and holds the original record books from the 1830s.

The Heritage Center is open to the public Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can learn more on their website.

Unclaimed Baggage:

The final stop is home to ‘Hugo’ a 1970 Chevy pickup that sits outside the building.

Since 1970 Unclaimed Baggage has been bringing a mixture of merchandise to Northeast Alabama. From the selection of clothing, books, jewelry, and more you’ll never know what you’ll find when you visit!

In 2020, the retail store celebrated its 50th anniversary! To celebrate they took Hugo on the road to visit all 50 states!

When it comes to receiving the merchandise for the store, Unclaimed Baggage has a partnership with airlines. Once the boxes, or baggage, arrive at their facility they go through it all to make sure there are no surprises for shoppers.

The oddest item found was a live rattlesnake, which you can see a taxidermy version in the museum when you visit! You can learn more about the history and store hours on their website.
