Getting a good night’s sleep is a crucial part of being healthy, but it’s often easier said than done. Kids, work, stress and life in general have a funny way of interfering with people’s ability to get some solid shuteye.
So it’s hardly surprising that research has shown that more than a third of Americans are sleep-deprived. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend that adults get at least seven hours of sleep each night. If you’re getting less than that, you could be at risk of developing chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
Sure, some things are out of your control. But if you regularly find that you’re struggling to get enough sleep, you might want to consider trying some sleep saviors. “With sleep products, it’s very individual,” board-certified sleep medicine researcher W. Christopher Winter, MD, of Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine and author of The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How to Fix It, tells Yahoo Life. “You may not know why you’re not sleeping well, and it’s perfectly reasonable to try different things out to see if they work for you.”
