Wendy's "We Beefin?" mixtape is the fast-food rap we never knew we needed

Wendy's is no stranger to crushing it on social media, and its "We Beefin?" mixtape is the latest example of how it trolls competitors — and wins.

In this new age of advertising and communicating directly with customers, brands have to get creative. Here’s a new idea: write, produce, and drop an album. Why, you ask? Well, it seems to be working for Wendy’s.

On Friday, March 23rd, Wendy’s pulled a Beyoncé and dropped a surprise mixtape fittingly called “We Beefin?” on an unsuspecting public. The five-track tape hilariously takes aim at the fast-food chain’s major competitors, dissing the likes of McDonald’s and Burger King. And here’s the best part: It’s not just a joke. The restaurant released, like, professionally produced songs for fast-food fans to listen to, and they sound legit.

This mixtape isn’t the first time Wendy’s has come for other fast-food chains online. On Black Friday 2017, the store poked fun at McDonald’s after the chain posted an incomplete tweet. When McD’s shared a tweet reading only “Black Friday **** Need copy and link****”, the folks at Wendy’s were quick to take a dig, responding: “When the tweets are as broken as the ice cream machine.” Can you feel that burn?!

That wasn’t even the only time Wendy’s dissed McDonald’s online, either. When McDonald’s announced it would start making its signature quarter pounders out of fresh instead of frozen beef, Wendy’s had some words. “So you’ll still use frozen beef in MOST of your burgers in ALL of your restaurants? Asking for a friend.”

Now, Wendy’s is taking this (mostly friendly, we hope) feud one step further and created some surprisingly good songs taking on its fried-food rivals.

Of course, Wendy’s committed to the mixtape, first teasing the release by posting the album art to Twitter on Wednesday, March 21st. Featuring a single, dramatic burger patty against a white backdrop, the image was captioned, “Fresh, never frozen beats,” along with the release date.

We can’t make this stuff up.

The cover is a play on the art from the Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready To Die album, and while this might offend serious rap fans, it’s clear Wendy’s meant for it to be some silly satire.

So, what are the songs like? Well, the tracks feature a woman rapping, whom we can assume to be the personification of the Wendy’s logo. And she does not pull any punches. The mixtape revisits Wendy’s Twitter feuds with all the major food chains, taking jabs at the Mickey D’s ice-cream machine, lines at the Burger King drive-thru, and more.

The mixtape is available on Spotify, Google Play, and Apple Music. It may be about some major beef, but these cheesy songs are best enjoyed with a side of fries.
