The Playoffs began Tuesday night on season 24 of The Voice when Niall Horan had to whittle his team down from six to three. The original five members that made it through the Knockouts—Huntley, Mara Justine, Niall Horan, Alexa Wildish, Claudia B, Nini Iris—and then his Super Save Julia Roome.

Each coach got to bring back an artist from any team for their Super Save, and Niall chose Julia because, “This artist was just unbelievable. I just couldn't lose a voice that good that early,” he said.

Here’s how the night played out:

Nini Iris

Song: “River” by Bishop Briggs

Niall said: Every time you come out here, you get better and better and the notes you hit get more powerful. We’re missing that in the industry. There’s no big belters out there that have such control and uniqueness to them like you do. I’m constantly blown away by you.

Claudia B

Song: “Talking to the Moon” by Bruno Mars

Niall said: “I am so glad I saved you. That was beautiful. I have goosebumps. It was so pretty. You made my decision even harder than it was going to be."

Huntley

Song: “Daylight” by David Kushner

Niall said: “Huntley, it was insane. I don’t know if you guys know this, but I threw a spanner in the works. I wanted to see if he would step up to a song that he wouldn’t necessarily pick. Well, Huntley, that was some performance. That was the best you’ve ever sung. Everybody here loves you. Everybody here thinks you’re amazing. I know for a fact that the people in America have been falling in love with you more and more. You’re one of those people who has something to say to the world. When you have a voice like that, that’s going to be one helluva album and I’m going to buy it."

Julia Roome (Super Save)

Song: “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper

Niall said: “I am so glad we had a Super Save. There’s no way we could allow you to leave this competition. I am just so proud of you. You’re an incredible talent with such character, control, uniqueness and you’ve made my decision extremely difficult. You know how stacked this team is. How I’m going to turn six to three, I don’t know.”

Mara Justine

Song: “You’ve Got the Love” by Florence + The Machine

Niall said: “We had a great chat about making the verses and the outro of the song small and tender, I think you did it unbelievably well today. I don’t want to say I told you so, but I told you so. That is Mara’s best performance so far.”

Alexa Wildish

Song: “Fields of Gold” by Sting

Niall said: “You bleed emotion and authenticity. It’s been so good to watch you among all the big belters. That’s the biggest compliment I can give you because you stand out. This girl is ridiculously talented, and the world will see it at some point.”

Then it was crunch time and Niall had to select three of the six artists. The three artists that Niall picked were:

Huntley

Niall said: “Huntley has such an individual tone in his voice. He’s a machine on stage. Unbelievable performer. There’s not many voices like his. There’s a real spot for him in our industry.”

Nini Iris

Niall said: “Nini is the most ready. She knows exactly who she is. She can win this whole thing.”

Mara Justine

Niall said: “Mara is perfect for the live shows because of the energy she brings. The control, the quality of her voice, she’s so exciting for this competition.”
