Who Went Home and Who Made It Through to the Top 5 Last Night on ‘American Idol’
With American Idol judges Lionel Richie and Katy Perry at Windsor Castle last night performing at the coronation concert for King Charles III, guest judges Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran joined Luke Bryan at the judges table as the Top 8 performed songs in hopes of making it into the Top 5.
The songs that the Top 8—Colin Stough, Haven Madison, Iam Tongi, Megan Danielle, Oliver Steele, Warren Peay, Wé Ani, and Zachariah Smith—performed were taken from Alanis’ songbook, so luckily, she also mentored the singers.
Then she and Ed also performed on the American Idol stage. Sheerhan sang an acoustic version of "Eyes Closed" and she sang “Thank U.”
As a result of Idol being live coast-to-coast, voting was live as well, so at the end of the night, the results were revealed with the Top 8 reduced by three to the Top 5.

Here’s how Sunday night went down as the Top 8 performed to make it into the Top 5:
Warren Peay
Song: “All I Really Want”
Alanis: “You did what we talked about. The dynamics: building small and medium and big. This is a version I never thought I would hear in my career. So, thank you for adding to it.”
Zachariah Smith
Song: “Ironic”
Ed: “I love that song and I think you rocked it. You voice is super, super powerful.”
Iam Tongi and Oliver Steele duet: “Photograph” by Ed Sheeran
Ed: “You complement each other. Your tones go together. I got emotional listening to that.”
Luke: “Great arrangement guys. So emotional, so spiritual.”
Haven Madison
Song: “You Learn”
Alanis: “Just working with and seeing you perform, your confidence. You spoke about wanting to be authentic. You have that inside out music in your body.”
Ed: “I was impressed vocally.”
Luke: “We first met you; you were sitting at a piano playing original songs. Now, you’re smiling and having fun. What growth you have.”
Warren Peay and Wé Ani dueted on Ed’s “Dancing in the Dark”
Ed: “I am loving these renditions. It was really cool. Thank you so much for doing it.”
Colin Stough
Song: “Hand in My Pocket”
Alanis: “I did not see that coming. If nasty is this, I love nasty. You also brought the inward looking and built it up.”
Ed: “That is really up my alley. I love how it rocked out at the end, but you gave it a different spin at the beginning. You made it your own.”
Haven Madison and Zachariah Smith dueted on “Thinking Out Loud.”
Ed: “I usually find when people sing my songs, they do them better than I do. Really soulful, really powerful.”
Megan Danielle
Song: “Head Over Feet”
Ed: “I genuinely forgot for a second that I was at American Idol and I felt like I was watching a singer from the ‘60s. I was really, really impressed. Luke gave me a nudge.”
Luke: “I am just loving watching these two. I nudged Ed, this girl has a tone. You really played it in the pocket. You made it inviting. You nailed it. Your voice makes that happen.”
Iam Tongi
Song: “Guardian”
Alanis: “You took what we brainstormed together and took it to another level. You have a velvet voice.”
Ed: “I felt like you really connected with the song which makes us listeners connect.
Luke: “Great job. You always light the room up.”
Wé Ani
Song: “Uninvited”
Alanis: “When I first heard your first rendition of this, it was perfect. What I mean is I want to believe you are singing to somebody. Tonight’s version felt like you were dedicating this to somebody.”
Luke: “It’s such a haunting song. We have heard contestants through the years do that song, but that was the best. I think you had good instruction.”
Megan Danielle and Colin Stough dueted on “Dive.”
Ed: “This was actually the first thing I saw today. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Whoever put you together was a genius. You complement each other so well.”
Luke: “Megan you do good with these big runs. And Colin was like, ‘I’m going to try this. I got it.’”
Oliver Steele—Who shaved his head in solidarity with his dad, who was in the audience.
Song: “You Oughta Know”
Alanis: “When we first met, you told me you didn’t lead with your anger. You really brought it. I love the idea of you and men in this moment, sad and terrified.”
American Idol will return on Sunday, May 14 on ABC when the Top 5 will celebrate the magic of Disney by performing songs from the Disney songbook. Disney night is also a fun night as Katy Perry dresses up in costume. In the past, she has been Snow White, Cinderella, Ursula (The Little Mermaid), Mrs. Jumbo (Dumbo), Tinker Bell (Peter Pan), and Ariel (The Little Mermaid). And the Top 5 will become the Top 3 going into the finale.
