'We're here to make people happy': Aesthetics practice continues to grow in Battle Creek
BATTLE CREEK — Angela Brannen is the first to admit she's a people pleaser by nature.
Simply put, Brannen just wants people to be happy. Through her work as a nurse practitioner, she strives to make her clients look and feel their very best. She also wants to build their confidence any way she can.
This passion for helping others is at the heart of Brannen's medispa, FAB Face and Body. Nestled in a scenic, wooded area rich with wildlife at 3494 Capital Ave. SW, the aesthetics practice offers botox, dermal fillers, microneedling (collagen induction), B12 shots, teeth whitening, body/emsculpting and massage, among a variety of other treatments.
"We’re a full service med spa," Brannen explained Tuesday. "We have a modality for pretty much every part of the body, head to toe."
Brannen, a married mother of two, founded FAB Face and Body as a traveling business in 2020. After building up a client base through word of mouth, she secured a brick-and-mortar location for the business at the Minges Creek Athletic Club in February 2022.
"Minges started with just two rooms and quickly we kind of ran out of space there," Brannen said.
Desperately in need of more room, Brannen launched renovations to add two additional rooms at the athletic club. The work was nearly complete when the building at 3494 Capital Ave. SW became available.
"It was horrible timing for this building," Brannen said. "But my dad says, 'if you wait for the right time to do everything, you’ll never do anything.' We just had to pull the trigger."
FAB Face and Body transitioned to Capital Avenue Southwest in June 2023. The new location offers roughly five times more space than the 1,200 square feet available at Minges, allowing Brannen and her staff to slowly add additional services.
If Brannen had to design a building from scratch, this would be it.
"Every single morning when I pull in here, the ducks and the geese are usually waking up, coming out of the woods, and there’s deer crossing, and the sun is coming up, and whether it’s snow or the leaves falling or the trees blooming and the flowers blooming, it is so peaceful," Brannen said. "I count my blessings every day, really."
In the new space, Brannen is joined by seven staff members, including another nurse, three estheticians and a massage therapist. Together, the group strives to help people feel better, meeting each individual wherever they are at in their wellness journey.
"We know this industry can seem intimidating or scary, but it’s not," Brannen said. "If you come in, we have consultations that are complementary, we talk all about it, there’s no pressure. I’ll educate people, I’m not telling you (what to do). You (just) tell me what bothers you and then I’ll just educate you on things that we offer."
The community response has been incredibly humbling thus far as the the aesthetics practice received the Emerging Business Achievement Award from Battle Creek Chamber of Commerce in 2023 as well as the Best Cosmetic Practice Award from the Chamber this year.
"I feel really humbled, just super blessed," Brannen said. "It’s nice validation that people want us here and that everything that I’ve thought and I’ve dreamt and I’m working really hard to achieve, that it’s being received well and that people are seeing the vision and saying, 'Yeah, this is nice, we wanted something like this.'"
The support is even more meaningful for Brannen because she grew up in Battle Creek.
"I’m thankful to Battle Creek. I really appreciate our acceptance (here)," Brannen said. "Don’t be afraid to come on over and see us. We like to educate people on what we have … We’re here to make people happy."
