Where Is the Cast of 'The Hunger Games' Now?

When the Harry Potter movies took their final bow in 2011, a new young adult franchise was ready to fill in the gap: The Hunger Games. Starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, the four-film series became a cultural phenomenon, setting box-office records and making its young actors huge stars. But while Harry Potter had its share of dark themes, the boy wizard had nothing on The Hunger Games, which is about children fighting to the death in a battle royale broadcast for the entertainment of a dystopian society.

“It's about a government that has control over its people by keeping them separated and hungry and weak so that they can't fight back, which is completely real in so many countries,” Lawrence told The Guardian in 2012. “Fortunately, in this story, the people become angry enough to fight back.”

After a lengthy battle that unfolds over the course of Mockingjay — Part 1 and Part 2, Katniss and company finally end the reign of President Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland) for good—but not without suffering enormous losses. The unquestionably good news, though, is that Panem no longer has to sacrifice tributes for the Hunger Games.

Now, eight years after the debut of Mockingjay — Part 2, Hunger Games fans can return to Panem via The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which hits theaters on Friday, Nov. 17. Based on Suzanne Collins’ prequel novel of the same name, Songbirds and Snakes tells the story of a young Snow (Tom Blyth) as he mentors a District 12 tribute named Lucy (Rachel Zegler) for the 10th annual Hunger Games. Given what we know about Snow, however, it seems likely this won’t end well.

Where Is the Cast of the Original 'Hunger Games' Now?

Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen)

Jennifer Lawrence had already earned her first Oscar nomination by the time she starred in The Hunger Games, but the franchise catapulted her to a whole new level of stardom. She earned her second Oscar nod in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook and won, then went on to earn two more nominations for American Hustle and Joy. She also played Mystique in X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past, and Apocalypse. Her other major film credits include Red Sparrow, Don’t Look Up and Causeway. In 2023, she starred in the raunchy rom-com No Hard Feelings.

Lawrence and her husband, Cooke Maroney, tied the knot in October 2019. They welcomed son Cy in February 2022.

Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark)

After playing lovable baker Peeta in the Hunger Games series, Josh Hutcherson went on to star in Red Dawn, The Disaster Artist, and Tragedy Girls. From 2017 to 2020, he played Josh Futturman on the Hulu series Future Man. In 2023, he starred in the big-screen adaptation of the video game Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Liam Hemsworth (Gale Hawthorne)

Following his turn as Katniss’ almost-boyfriend Gale, Liam Hemsworth starred in The Dressmaker, Independence Day: Resurgence and Isn’t It Romantic. In August 2023, Netflix announced that Hemsworth will take over the role of Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill for the forthcoming Season 4 of The Witcher.

Hemsworth married longtime off-and-on girlfriend Miley Cyrus in December 2018, but the duo separated eight months later. He has been dating model Gabriella Brooks since late 2019.

Woody Harrelson (Haymitch Abernathy)

As one of the elder statesmen of the Hunger Games cast, Woody Harrelson had no trouble keeping busy after wrapping up the dystopian franchise. He went on to star in Season 1 of HBO’s True Detective and White House Plumbers, as well as movies including The Edge of Seventeen, War of the Planet of the Apes, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Venom, Zombieland: Double Tap, Triangle of Sadness and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. In 2023, he appeared in the sports comedy Champions.

Elizabeth Banks (Effie Trinket)

After The Hunger Games, Elizabeth Banks stepped behind the camera as the director of Pitch Perfect 2. She later helmed the 2019 reboot of Charlie’s Angels and 2023’s Cocaine Bear. On the acting front, she’s starred in Magic Mike XXL, Power Rangers, The Happytime Murders and Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later. In 2023, she starred in The Beanie Bubble, a dramedy following the rise and fall of the Beanie Babies craze.

Stanley Tucci (Caesar Flickerman)

Stanley Tucci’s Caesar Flickerman has a relative in Songbirds and Snakes: his ancestor Lucky Flickerman, played by Jason Schwartzman. His post-Panem resumé includes roles in Beauty and the Beast, The Children Act, The Witches, The King’s Man and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance WIth Somebody. From 2021 to 2022, he hosted the criminally underrated travel show Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy. In 2023, he starred in the first season of the Prime Video series Citadel.

Lenny Kravitz (Cinna)

After Lenny Kravitz’s character, Cinna, bowed out in Catching Fire, he went on to star in Holy Ghost, Shotgun Wedding, Better Things and Star. He's currently focusing on music again, with his 12th studio album, Blue Electric Light, set for release on March 15, 2024.

Donald Sutherland (Coriolanus Snow)

Donald Sutherland has kept extremely busy since his character, Coriolanus Snow (played as a young man in Songbirds and Snakes by Tom Blyth), died at the end of Mockingjay — Part 2. On the big screen, he’s appeared in Ad Astra, The Burnt Orange Heresy and Moonfall, and on TV, he’s starred in Swimming With Sharks and The Undoing. In November 2023, he debuted as Judge Isaac Parker in the Paramount+ series Lawmen: Bass Reeves.

Amandla Stenberg (Rue)

After her brief but memorable turn in the first Hunger Games movie, Amandla Stenberg starred in The Hate U Give, Dear Evan Hansen, Bodies Bodies Bodies and Everything, Everything. In 2023, she voiced Spider-Byte in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Jack Quaid (Marvel)

Jack Quaid—the son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan—made his film debut in The Hunger Games and soon became a star. He’s since appeared in Tragedy Girls, Logan Lucky, Rampage, Scream (2022) and Scream VI. In 2023, he reunited with Amandla Stenberg as a voice actor in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and had a small role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Since 2019, he’s played Hughie Campbell on the Prime Video series The Boys.

Isabelle Fuhrmann (Clove)

After her brief turn as a District 2 tribute in The Hunger Games, Isabelle Fuhrmann starred in Masters of Sex, Dear Eleanor, Good Girls Get High and The Last Thing Mary Saw. In 2022, she reprised her role as the mysterious Esther in Orphan: First Kill. She is set to appear in Kevin Costner’s epic drama Horizon: An American Saga in 2024.

Alexander Ludwig (Cato)

District 2 tribute Cato didn’t survive the first movie, but Alexander Ludwig’s star kept rising. He went on to star in Lone Survivor, Midway, Bad Boys for Life and Final Girl (not to be confused with The Final Girls, which he’s also in). From 2021 to 2023, he starred on the Starz series Heels.

Ludwig married jewelry designer Lauren Dear in 2020. The duo welcomed daughter Leni in April 2023.

Wes Bentley (Seneca Crane)

After his memorable turn as failed Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane, Wes Bentley appeared in Interstellar, Final Girl (with Alexander Ludwig, aka Cato), Knight of Cups, Mission: Impossible — Fallout and We Are Your Friends. He’s also starred in several seasons of American Horror Story. Since 2018, Bentley has played Jamie Dutton on Yellowstone.

Jena Malone (Johanna Mason)

Jena Malone stole every scene she was in from Catching Fire onward, then kept racking up roles in films including The Neon Demon, Nocturnal Animals, Antebellum and Stardust. Like Isabelle Fuhrmann (a.k.a. Clove), she’s slated to appear in 2024’s Horizon: American Saga.

Malone became a mom in 2016 with the arrival of son Ode Mountain, whom she shares with ex Ethan DeLorenzo.

Sam Claflin (Finnick Odair)

Sam Claflin’s performance as Finnick Odair, Panem’s version of a merman, was just the beginning. He went on to star in Me Before You, Adrift, The Nightingale, Enola Holmes and Last Night in Soho. From 2019 to 2022, he played Sir Oswald Mosley on Peaky Blinders, and in 2023, he starred as Billy Dunne on Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & The Six.

Claflin shares a son (born in 2015) and a daughter (born in 2018) with ex Laura Haddock.

Jeffrey Wright (Beetee Latier)

Since wrapping up his time in Panem, Jeffrey Wright’s prolific career has included roles in The Laundromat, The Goldfinch, The French Dispatch, The Batman and No Time to Die. In 2023, he starred in four movies: Asteroid City, American Fiction, Rustin and Atrabilious. From 2016 to 2022, he played Bernard/Arnold on HBO’s Westworld.

Philip Seymour Hoffman (Plutarch Heavensbee)

Philip Seymour Hoffman made his final film appearance in Mockingjay — Part 1 and Part 2, both of which were released after his February 2014 death at age 46 from a drug overdose.

His son, Cooper Hoffman, has since followed in his acting footsteps, starring in 2021’s Licorice Pizza.

Julianne Moore (Alma Coin)

Following her turn as truly awful District 13 leader Alma Coin, Julianne Moore went on to star in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Bel Canto, Gloria Bell, The Woman in the Window, The Glorias and Dear Evan Hansen (alongside Amandla Stenberg, a.k.a. Rue). In 2023, she starred in Sharper and May December.

Mahershala Ali (Boggs)

Mahershala Ali played a small role in Mockingjay — Part 1 and Part 2, then became one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood. He’s since won two Oscars (for 2016’s Moonlight and 2018’s Green Book) and starred in Roxanne Roxanne, Hidden Figures and Alita: Battle Angel. In 2023, he appeared in the film adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s novel Leave the World Behind. Eventually, Ali is set to star as Blade in Marvel’s reboot of the vampire franchise.

Ali became a father in 2017 when he welcomed daughter Bari with wife Amatus Sami-Karim.

Natalie Dormer (Cressida)

Natalie Dormer—who’s also known for playing Margaery Tyrell on Game of Thrones—later appeared in The Forest, In Darkness (which she also cowrote), The Professor and the Madman, Picnic at Hanging Rock and Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

Dormer became a mom in 2021 when she welcomed a daughter with partner David Oakes.
