Where to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the San Diego area

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexican culture after the country’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

The celebrations have even spread to the U.S., particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.

Here’s a list of Cinco de Mayo free events happening this weekend in the San Diego area:

Seaport Village
– Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
– All ages welcomed.
– Live music and entertainment includes folk dances by Ballet Folklorico Ti-Pai and an interactive salsa dancing workshop by Deseo Studios.

Old Town San Diego
– Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
– Old Town San Diego State Historic Park (4002 Wallace St.)
– Over 20 Latin bands and groups will perform on the Café Coyote Stage.
– Ballet Folklorico competition to take place in the historic state park.
– Stroll through the mercado where there are over 100 vendors.

Gaslamp Quarter
– Saturday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
– Fifth Avenue
– Six blocks of entertainment, live music and low rider displays.

Escondido
– Sunday from 11 a.m.
– Grape Day Park (321 N Broadway)
– outdoor live music festival
– variety of food and craft vendors
– Beer and spirit garden
– Kids zone
