Where To Work Out In Montauk Past Labor Day
Since it opened in 2008, the Surf Lodge in Montauk has become an East End institution. What was once a bohemian, relaxed antidote to its flashier Hamptons neighbors has exploded into the scene of all scenes, packed to the brim every single weekend with just about everyone you know and want to know.
Jayma Cardoso, the brains behind Surf, was paying attention, and she teamed up with Marisa Hochberg, her hotel's partnerships and wellness director, to create something a little more zen for those wishing to unplug and get fit.
They called it Surf Lodge Sanctuary, and opened it earlier this year in the heart of town.
"The reality is wellness became so important and popular, it was the right time to have a place solely dedicated to it to share with a larger audience," Cardoso says.
The two managed to bring on just about every major boutique fitness brand to fill out the Sanctuary's schedule. There are classes taught by instructors from Y7 (yoga), Dogpound (to train like a model), barre3 (barre), The Ness (a trampoline fitness), The Class by Taryn Toomey (barefoot conditioning that counts Jennifer Aniston and Gisele Bündchen among its fans), Torch’d by Isaac Calpito (Madonna is a fan), and Stretch'd (assisted stretching).
For those who prefer the East End in the off-season, the Sanctuary will offer these classes well past Labor Day, too.
And there is more to the space than just fitness. Over the summer, Cardoso and Hochberg organized a series of panels centered around various wellness-related topics. For example, earlier this month, they hosted one about cannabis with the co-founders of CBD brands like Sunday Scaries and Sweet Reason. Beauty entrepreneur Bobbi Brown is scheduled to speak about her "Beauty From the Inside Out" wellness brand, while ABC Carpet & Home will curate conversations with its Deepak Homebase series led by Deepak Chopra. And finally, a pop-up shop selling everything from FP Movement clothing to Moon Juice dusts rounds out the whole mind, body, and soul experience.
"Montauk has such a natural beauty—it's a place that inspires people," Cardoso says. "I couldn't imagine a better place to seek your personal wellness."
