We all know a Dad Movie when we see one: anything historical, sapped of color, and involving a lot of military jargon, creased foreheads, and tense scores. The 2015 film Bridge of Spies fits the bill perfectly, with a lead performance from Tom Hanks — the all-time King of the Dad Movie — for good measure. Spies is actually really good, though — the type of Dad Movie you don’t mind showing your father how to rent on Christmas Eve.

It helps that Steven Spielberg is at the helm, working from a Joel and Ethan Coen-assisted screenplay. The film, one of his biggest hits of the 2010s, grossed about $165.5 million in 2015 off a $40 million budget and was nominated for six Academy Awards in 2016, with Mark Rylance taking home an upset win for Best Supporting Actor that year. (Sylvester Stallone was the favorite on the awards circuit for Creed.)
Alongside Hanks and Rylance, the movie boasts an impressive supporting cast that includes Amy Ryan, Alan Alda, Scott Shepherd, Sebastian Koch, Austin Stowell, Billy Magnussen, Eve Hewson, Jesse Plemons, Michael Gaston, Noah Schnapp, Domenick Lombardozzi, and Dakin Matthews.
Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, Spies dramatizes the real-life capture of CIA pilot Francis Gary Powers (Stowell) after the Soviet Union shoots down his U-2 spy plane. Powers is sent to prison, relying on American lawyer James Donovan (Hanks), to facilitate his release. Donovan goes to Berlin to secure Powers’ freedom through a prisoner exchange, involving the Russians’ retrieval of Rudolf Abel (Rylance), a convicted spy and previous client of Donovan’s.
