These Whimsical Head Wraps Are Easy Like Sunday Morning
Yahoo Beauty would like to introduce you to The New-New, a column by Beauty Director Dana Oliver on the latest products, tools, and treatments that she’d happily spend her hard-earned money on.
Ever since I stopped straightening my natural hair over 15 years ago (way before it became a trend), head wraps have served both functional and fashionable purposes in my life.
I like to cover or dress up my coily locks in brightly colored and ornate materials, tying the ends of the fabric into oversized bows or mimicking the shape of a headband (the video below shows how to get these looks). Head wraps are like a second skin, especially during the warm-weather months, when I need to protect my scalp from the sun.
Now that it’s spring, I’m looking forward to swapping out those thicker textiles for the softer, brighter head wraps that make up Fanm Djanm’s Sunday Morning Light collection.
Chances are you’ve seen glamorous pictures of Paola Mathé on Instagram rocking elegantly styled head wraps from her Fanm Djanm line. The Haitian-born entrepreneur hand-selects fabrics and dyes and produces the head wraps from her Harlem studio.
For her Sunday Morning Light collection, Mathé chose light fabrics in neutral and pastel shades of pink, taupe, peach, lilac, and mint that were “inspired by the inherent beauty and softness of womanhood.” She even incorporated striped and patterned prints, as well as a bandeau-twisted headband for those wanting something a bit more bold.
Sunday mornings are a time to rest, regroup, and take in the beauty of each moment as it comes, according to Mathé. So it was imperative that this be reflected not only in the hues and textures of the head wraps, but also in the imagery for Sunday Morning Light’s lookbook.
“You don’t often find a lot of visuals of black women in dreamlike, whimsical scenes,” she says. Mathé stepped into the dual role of photographer/creative director to create images that teetered between reality and fantasy. Models Rita Lynn, Tash and Cody Lee, and Marsha Larose posed in head wraps and vibrant eyeliner that made their cocoa complexions stand out even more.
What I love most about the Sunday Morning Light collection is how airy the head wraps are, and they boast a length that makes it super-easy to create countless styles. Not to mention, these colors are begging to be worn on brown skin that’s glowing beneath the sunlight.
What could be more beautiful?
