Whoopi Goldberg Slips Up and Disses 'American Idol' on 'The View'
The View's Whoopi Goldberg almost got herself into trouble with ABC this week, after she began to criticize a fellow show that runs on the network while live on air.
During a clip from the Wednesday, May 24 broadcast of the ABC talk show, Goldberg and her co-hosts were having their usual roundtable discussion when the Sister Act star began to talk about how judgmental our society can be, claiming that "the beginning of the downfall of society," started with one particular singing competition show.
She then pointed to executive producer Brian Teta in the audience to remind her what show she was talking about, to which the producer replied, "ABC's American Idol?"
The audience then let out a giggle, as Goldberg was clearly getting herself into a sticky situation by dissing a fellow network program—but that didn't stop her from continuing on with her spiel.
Prefacing her stance with the fact that American Idol didn't always air on ABC, as it started out on Fox, Goldberg then began to double down, stating, "Once we gave people the ability to judge other people, I think we ran amok with it and it's gone out of control."
She didn't stop there, as she continued to blame the singing competition show for society's judgmental nature before she was interrupted Teta, who tried to put an end to the American Idol criticism.
"The thing is that [American Idol] has gotten better, and you like it now, remember?" he told Goldberg, giving her the hint to stop dissing the ABC network show.
The audience, as well as the other co-hosts, then began erupting in laughter, while Sunny Hostin tried to help out her friend, confirming, "She likes it. ABC, she likes it!
"When I was watching it, ABC didn't have it. It's a different show. It's a very different show," Goldberg continued to clarify, noting that the show has different judges now, too.
"ABC knows that I feel like this, I've told them!" she asserted, while exclaiming, "It had nothing to do with them!"
"See you started all this stuff," she joked to Teta.
