Why Beyoncé and Jay-Z Skipped the 2022 MTV VMAs

Beyoncé's three-act new music era has begun, but Bey isn't blessing the MTV VMAs with her presence again just yet. The singer and her husband Jay-Z skipped this year's Newark, New Jersey ceremony tonight. The two's decision to not attend is very reasonable, given neither is nominated in any categories. Beyoncé's new album Renaissance will be eligible for next year's award show.

So where in the world are Beyoncé and Jay-Z? The power couple was last photographed yachting and showing PDA in Croatia on Wednesday. Bey was also snapped drinking what appears to be champagne on the “$1.5 million per week” (or so Daily Mail reports) mega yacht she and Jay-Z have been sailing on.

Beyoncé hit a major milestone with Renaissance, topping the Billboard 200 albums (for the album in its entirety) and the Hot 100 songs charts (for its lead single “Break My Soul”) after its first week out. Billboard reports Bey's release is the biggest first week for any woman artist this year.

Shortly after the numbers came out, Bey posted a “thank you” note on her site to her fans.

Beyoncé acknowledged the major chart success, writing, “We did it!!! Thank you so much for your love and support. Nothing made me happier than seeing a club full of people sing every word to every song from top to bottom. This was years of experimentation. This was years of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears. I'm grateful, and it was worth it. I'm thankful that it was received and understood. Thank you to my beautiful team for your heart and grind. Thank you to all of the brilliant collaborators and musicians, composers, and everyone involved in creating this piece of art. And thank you to the absolute best fans on the planet. I'm grateful to be loved by you. I love y'all deep, B.”
