Why Beyoncé and Jay-Z Skipped the 2020 Oscars
Beyoncé and Jay-Z made a surprise appearance at the very first awards show this year, the Golden Globes, but so far, they haven't been to any others. They skipped the Grammys and the Critics' Choice Awards, where Beyoncé was nominated. And no Oscars tonight, either. The music power couple was not seen on the red carpet.
Beyoncé's song "Spirit" was on the shortlist for an Oscars nomination (for Best Original Song) but then didn't get nominated. Beyoncé's entire The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack was snubbed. With no nominations and no positions as presenters on the show, Bey and Jay-Z are justified in skipping the ceremony.
But that doesn't mean they're skipping out on the night entirely. The two have become known for hosting one of the most exclusive Oscar after parties each year. Rihanna went to last year's, and Emilia Clarke later shared that her meeting with Beyoncé there didn't go well because she was so starstruck.
“So I did not expect to see them, you know, in the flesh, I wasn’t expecting that at all,” she recalled during a talk show appearance in October. “I was just like, ‘Oh my god, I’m invited!’ And Queen Bey came up to me, and obviously, looked at me like, ‘Oh … I’d like to talk to you!’ and I just did not respond in the way that I was thinking she thought that I might respond. As in, she obviously came up and was like, this’ll be cool, and I was like, ‘Oh my god.’ [I was] too many drinks in, started crying, it didn’t go well. I mean, literally, eyes welling up like, ‘I can’t handle this, it’s too intense.’”
