Why Beyoncé Skipped the 2020 Billboard Music Awards
Beyoncé is up for two Billboard Music Awards tonight, but Bey chose not the grace the ceremony with her presence in person. Beyoncé is nominated for top R&B female artist and top R&B album for Homecoming: The Live Album. Neither category was announced during the show. And with Bey not presenting or performing, it's understandable why the singer would opt not to take any risk of contracting COVID by physically attending the ceremony. (She actually hasn't attended the BBMAs since 2011, for what it's worth.) Only winners made appearances in person to accept their awards for the categories that were announced.
The Billboard Music Awards are happening in Los Angeles this evening—albeit with no audience amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. While Beyoncé hasn't been seen out often, she was last sighted on the other side of the country, on the East Coast. She and Jay-Z were photographed eating out at an Italian restaurant in New York City at the end of September.
Beyoncé, like many other celebs, has used her social media to encourage her fans to vote in the upcoming 2020 election. Her social media presence otherwise has been limited, like so many other stars'.

Beyoncé addressed how she felt about Lemonade and Homecoming being snubbed at the Grammys and Oscars during her January 2020 ELLE interview.
She wrote that winning isn't her priority anymore. "???? I began to search for deeper meaning when life began to teach me lessons I didn’t know I needed," she started. "Success looks different to me now. I learned that all pain and loss is in fact a gift. Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else. Then I had Blue, and the quest for my purpose became so much deeper. I died and was reborn in my relationship, and the quest for self became even stronger. It’s difficult for me to go backwards. Being 'number one' was no longer my priority. My true win is creating art and a legacy that will live far beyond me. That’s fulfilling."
