Why Cardi B Skipped the iHeartRadio Music Awards
Cardi B won the Best Hip-Hop Artist award at tonight's iHeartRadio Music Awards, but she chose not to attend the Los Angeles ceremony. In a pre-recorded acceptance speech, Cardi B told fans that "I’m busy doing a couple of things."
Stil, this is a big, big night for Cardi, who has a ton of nominations. In addition to the award she won, Cardi B is up for Song of the Year (for "Girls Like You" with Maroon 5), Female Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration (three of her songs are nominated: “Finesse (Remix),” which she recorded with Bruno Mars; “Girls Like You,” a collaboration with Maroon 5; and “I Like It,” by Cardi, Bad Bunny, and J Balvin), Hip-Hop Song of the Year ("I Like It"), R&B Song of the Year ("Finesse (Remix)"), Best Fan Army (BardiGang), and Best Music Video (she has multiple nominations there, too: "Girls Like You," "Finesse (Remix)", "I Like It," and "Taki Taki" featuring her, DJ Snake, Selena Gomez, and Ozuna).
Cardi B made her last awards appearance at the Grammys with her husband Offset. She wore a 1995 Thierry Mugler dress that made a huge impact. But it was a statement in itself that she and Offset attended together: Just two months before, Cardi had announced the two were separating after a year of marriage.
“So everybody been bugging me and everything, and you know I’ve been trying to work things out with my baby father for a hot minute now," she said then. "And we’re really good friends and, you know, we’re really good business partners...he’s always somebody that I went to to talk to, and we got a lot of love for each other, but things just haven’t been working out between us for a long time.”
“And it’s nobody fault," she continued. "I guess we just grew out of love, but we’re not together anymore. I don’t know, it might take time to get a divorce, and I’m going to always have a lot of love for him because he is my daughter’s father."
At the end of January, TMZ reported the two had gotten back together. Offset was said to have adopted a "no groupies" rule to prove to Cardi that he was serious about making their marriage work.
