Why Diane Keaton Doesn't Desire Romance

The 77-year-old actress has never married and wants to keep things that way.

Diane Keaton is perfectly fine with being single.

In a new interview with AARP, the actress shared she isn't looking to find a partner.

"I don't date," she said. "Highly unlikely [that I'll ever get married]. I don't remember anyone calling me, going, 'This is So-and-So. I’d like to take you out.' They don't happen. Of course not."

In a 2019 interview with InStyle, the 77-year-old was asked if she's ever asked out on dates.

"Never. All Right?" she responded. "Let's just get that straight. That one's important. I haven't been on a date in, I would say, 35 years. No dates." She added that though she has "a lot of male friends," she'd rather keep things platonic with them rather than "mwah-mwah" with them.

While it may be surprising that Keaton, who previously dated Hollywood heartthrobs like Warren Beatty and Al Pacino, doesn't seek romance, she revealed the important reason why in her 2021 Interview Magazine feature.

Lisa Kudrow asked her what informed her decision to not ever want to get married. The actress looked back at the dynamic between her mother and father, noting that while her dad could pursue a career, her mother's work took a backseat so she could raise her three children.

"I feel like she chose family over her dreams. And she was just the best mother, but I think that she is the reason why I didn’t get married," explained Keaton. "I didn't want to give up my independence."

Another reason, Keaton joked, is because nobody's ever popped the question. "I should've started with that and called it a day," she quipped.
