Airing on Disney+, honors will be given out to such luminaries as Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson and Rage Against the Machine. For the latter—and five-time nominee for the Hall of Fame—what a difference 23 years makes, as things were far from harmonious back in the early 2000s.

Why did Rage Against the Machine break up?
On Oct. 18, 2000, lead singer Zack de la Rocha posted a statement announcing his departure from Rage Against the Machine. "I feel that it is now necessary to leave Rage because our decision-making process has completely failed. It is no longer meeting the aspirations of all four of us collectively as a band, and from my perspective, has undermined our artistic and political ideal."
Guitarist Tom Morello said in a later interview, "There was so much squabbling over everything. And I mean everything. We would even have fist fights over whether our T-shirts should be mauve or camouflaged! It was ridiculous. We were patently political, internally combustible. It was ugly for a long time." De la Rocha's departure prompted the official breakup of the band, though its other three members in Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk would stay together in the group's next iteration Audioslave.
Did Rage Against the Machine get back together?
Yes! The band first reunited when they headlined the final day of Coachella in 2007. The performance proved to be more than just a run-off, and the group came back together to tour on and off until 2011. Rage Against the Machine was meant to reunite again in spring of 2020 until the COVID-19 pandemic hit and prompted a postponement. Finally, their much-anticipated second reunion launched in July of 2022, but only lasted a couple of performances before de la Rocha tore his Achilles tendon during a performance. The rest of the tour dates have been postponed indefinitely.

Why did Rage Against the Machine get banned from SNL?
Rage Against the Machine is part of the rarified air in the history Saturday Night Live of previously-booked guests who are banned from returning. The band performed as musical guests in April 1996 in an episode hosted by Steve Forbes, who was then running as a presidential candidate for the Republican party. As an act of protest, during their first performance, they chose to attach upside-down American flags to their amplifiers, described as "a sign of distress or great danger." According to an account from the band, SNL stagehands hurriedly rushed the stage and took the flags down just in time for the performance to go live. Rage Against the Machine was promptly escorted out of Studio 8H following their first number, and did not get the chance to perform a second.
