Why Dua Lipa Skipped the 2022 MTV VMAs
Dua Lipa chose not to go the distance for tonight's MTV VMAs in Newark, New Jersey. After attending the wedding of her friend Simon Porte Jacquemus in Charleval, France, on Saturday, Lipa understandably didn't make the flight back state-side for tonight's award ceremony.
Lipa is up for Best Collaboration with Elton John (“Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)”) and with Megan Thee Stallion (“Sweetest Pie”), along with Best Art Direction (“Sweetest Pie”) and Best Visual Effects (“Sweetest Pie”). She and John also are nominated for Song of the Year for “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix).” Lipa's absence is understandable given the distance and the fact she is up for more minor categories, and Song of the Year is a very competitive race.
While Lipa is on tour currently, she is enjoying a little break between legs. She'll go back to performing on September 8 in S?o Paulo, Brazil.
Lipa spoke to Vogue in May about how she feels touring for Future Nostalgia, an album she released during the heart of the coronavirus pandemic. “I didn’t get to see people’s reaction to the album in real life,” she said. “So being on tour and seeing the crowds is like, Oh, it was a really big album. I get so excited seeing people coming together as a collective.”
In regards to dancing versus singing, Lipa said, “All I ever wanted was for it to be about the music. My goal was, I want the music to be good enough so that people would talk about that more than anything else. But unless you’re a fully formed pop star who’s trained in pop-star camp for five fucking years before you hit the stage for the first time, one misstep, one wrong move, one dance that doesn’t really work and it’s used against you. That was fucking hard for me.”
