Why is there a green and blue 'Sheboygan' surf stand near the lake? We have the answer.

SHEBOYGAN – Visit Sheboygan unveiled a new “selfie” station near Deland Park to promote the city’s lakeshore identity.

The stand, on the sidewalk off the corner of Broughton Drive and Ontario Avenue, has green letters spelling “Sheboygan” in three rows accompanied by two artificial waves and a yellow and blue surfboard where people can pretend to surf.

The city’s popular epithet “Malibu of the Midwest” lines the bottom of the stand in white text, too. Surfers, kiteboarders and other water sport enthusiasts can be seen on Sheboygan's lakeshore year round.

“We wanted to create a visual piece along the lakeshore that reflects our marketing strategies, promoting ‘The Malibu of the Midwest’ throughout the United States,” Shelly Harms, public relations director for Visit Sheboygan, said in a news release. “Visitors and locals alike are drawn to the waterfront and immersive displays and experiences are key to creating last memories.”

The selfie station was set up before the Fourth of July. Visit Sheboygan encourages visitors to include #sheboygansurferselfie if they post a photo with the stand on social media.
