Why Joe Alwyn Isn't at the 2022 MTV VMAs With Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn may have been in New York City together this week, but the couple of five years decided to keep the night focused solely on Swift. The pop star stepped out on the MTV VMAs red carpet on her own in a stunning silver mini dress, without Alwyn, tonight. The two have not yet made a red carpet appearance together in their nearly six years dating. There is a chance Alwyn could quietly join Swift at the ceremony, but that move would be unprecedented for them. They've never attended any music award show together.
While Alwyn and Swift did sit together at the Golden Globes in 2020, it was a rare exception in their mostly private love story. The two made a choice early on to keep their relationship out of the public eye. As Alwyn explained of that decision to ELLE UK in April, “It's not really [because I] want to be guarded and private, it's more a response to something else. We live in a culture that is so increasingly intrusive… The more you give—and frankly, even if you don't give it—something will be taken.”
He double downed on that point during his GQ interview released in May, saying he hoped people stopped caring about him and Swift as a couple. “I think because the precedent was set—that our choice is to be private and not feed that side of things—the more you do that, hopefully, the more that intrusiveness or intrigue drops off,” he mused. So far, it hasn't yet, but Alwyn and Swift's choice to not attend the VMAS together won't add much fodder to the public intrigue.
