Why Kate Beckinsale's Facialist Isn't A Big Fan of Coconut Oil
Anyone who has ever met celebrity aesthetician Kát Rudu has inevitably asked her the same question: What’s the secret to amazing skin? So, naturally, when we recently sat down with the skin care guru responsible for Kate Beckinsale‘s glow, we wanted to know the exact same thing. Here are Rudu’s best-kept secrets for a flawless complexion.
Preparation is key for no makeup-makeup
Start with freshly exfoliated skin and spritz with a mist. Rudu makes a DIY facial spray using witch hazel, chamomile tea, and rose oil. “A natural, alcohol-free toner is vital because it restores the skin’s pH balance, and tightens the pores,” she says.

Hydrate skin and spot-treat imperfections with concealer. “You want your skin to feel plumped, elastic, and to have a spongy hydrated look,” says Rudu. A sheer layer of powder will set the look, and Rudu suggests applying a pink highlighter on the eyelids, nose, and above the cheeks with a little sweep of bronzer across your cheekbones and temples.
Don’t change your routine too much for fall
“Nothing should really change accept maybe hydrating,” says Rudu. “Rose oils are good; witch hazel [without alcohol] is amazing for dry skin.”
The beauty maven also suggests heading to the pros between seasons, as the manual exfoliators you use at home won’t do the trick here. “You have to get an exfoliation treatment,” she says.

Beauty really does come from within
“Staying hydrated will help your skin look toned and supple and will help to reduce dark circles,” says Rudu.
The celeb facialist suggests drinking water first thing in the morning and consuming upwards of 12 glasses a day. She also credits proper nutrition as a factor in achieving great skin (Rudu is a vegan). And, she also recommends adding more chlorophyll to your diet.
Vitamin C is a major key
“Vitamin C serum is so important [for all skin types],” Rudu says, “but, you have to see what it is mixed with.”
She recommends looking for a serum mixed with vitamin E and ferulic acid. Also, potency is paramount. Her full line of Kát Rudu products offers a Hydra Cell Vitamin C Serum with a potency of 18 percent vitamin C and ingredients like vegan hyaluronic acid, ferulic acid and vitamin E.

Try a celeb-worthy beauty routine
A simple, consistent skin care routine will have you one step closer to looking like Rudu’s clients Kate Beckinsale and Eva Mendes.
Wash your face morning and evening, use a toner or tonic, scrub your face three to four days a week with a gentle scrub, apply a vitamin C serum, and lock it in with moisturizer.
Step away from the coconut oil
It might sound counter to everything you think you know about skin care trends but Rudu is not a big fan of coconut oil on your face. Shocking, right?
“I don’t think anyone should use it every day. It clogs pores and it actually causes oil and sebum to form on the skin. And it makes your pores bigger,” she says.

Get your blood flowing
When you haven’t caught enough zzz’s you need to jumpstart tired circulation.
“Cleanse your skin using a soft facial sponge or gentle exfoliant to stimulate and awaken the red blood cells. This helps to reduce puffiness and swelling and makes your face radiant and bright,” says Rudu.

Don’t be afraid to use your knuckles to give yourself a spa-worthy massage, as you’re applying serums and moisturizers. “The light pressure stimulates circulation and helps the serum sink deeper into the dermal layers,” she says.
The fridge is your friend
A chilled eye gel or cream will wake-up your whole face. Rudu keeps her Cooling Cucumber Eye Bright Gel in the fridge.
“Or, you can cut fresh cucumbers and place them over your eyes for about three minutes, if you have the time. Cucumbers not only reduce puffiness, they hold up to 90 percent water and are extremely hydrating,” she says.
To energize your skin do a quick swipe of an ice cube across your skin after you cleanse.
