Why Maisie Williams Thinks She’ll Have Trouble Finding Roles After ‘Game of Thrones’

Maisie Williams is one of our favorite young actresses, but the Game of Thrones star thinks she’ll struggle to find roles after the epic series ends. And the reason why says a lot about a major problem in Hollywood.

“It’s only now I’m starting to realize the characters that are available to me because of the way I look and the characters that aren’t available to me,” the 20-year-old told the Irish Times in a recent interview. “It’s a very shallow industry. And I don’t look like someone who is cast in roles that are, well, sexualized.”

Williams nabbed the role of Arya Stark in 2009, a few months after her 12th birthday, so she was just 13 years old for the majority of the first season, and not only new to the biz, but also (self-admittedly) naive about various things. And while she has since earned roles in Doctor Who, The Book of Love, and the new animated comedy Early Man, she worries about how her looks will affect her future as she comes into her own as an adult.

“Don’t get me wrong. I’m completely in awe of Hollywood’s leading ladies,” she said. “I love looking at those totally jaw-droppingly beautiful women. But I think it’s sad that you only get to see one type of beautiful on screen.”
