Why Meghan Markle’s Trip to Australia Will Be a Major Test for Her
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are embarking on their first overseas tour as a married couple this fall-and according to one royal expert, it’ll be a major “litmus test” for the Duchess of Sussex.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will visit Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Tonga on the trip, according to an official royal announcement. Their visit will coincide with the Invictus Games, a competition Prince Harry founded in 2014, which take place in Sydney this year. It’s still unclear exactly when they’ll go on their trip, but the Invictus Games run from October 20 to October 28, so it’s safe to say it’ll fall around those dates.
“She’s had a taste of the Invictus Games in Toronto last year but she was Harry’s girlfriend. Now she is his wife there will be much more expectation,” Dickie Arbiter, the former spokesperson for the Queen, told The Mirror. “She’s a good communicator, she’s good at talking to people but it will be a real baptism of fire. They will have a very demanding schedule and the Duchess will have to get used to local customs with the eyes of the world on her. But no doubt she will come through with flying colors and they will show they will be a force of good for the Commonwealth and the Royal Family on the global stage.”
Meghan and Harry have focused their efforts on engaging with young people in the Commonwealth countries, and their trip will continue that mission. “Later this year we will embark on a tour of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga,” Prince Harry said at a reception for the Commonwealth Youth Challenge in July. “This will be a wonderful opportunity for us to meet and hear from more young people about their ideas for creating a better future.”
