Why Meghan Markle Used a Different Name on Daughter Lili’s Birth Certificate
On June 4, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed a new child, a daughter named Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana, into their little family.
This time around, though, Harry and Meghan are no longer working members of the royal family. TMZ noticed one specific change after Lilibet’s arrival: On Lili’s Santa Barbara birth certificate, both parents have listed their names differently than on their son Archie’s birth certificate. Meghan is listed as “Rachel Meghan Markle.”
On Archie’s birth certificate, Meghan’s name reads “Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex.” Harry also made a name change on his daughter’s birth certificate; his first name is listed as “The Duke of Sussex” and his last name is “His Royal Highness.” He does not list a middle name.
The change for Meghan simply seems to be the result of the fact that this is her personal preference.
Earlier this year, a spokesperson for Meghan released a statement correcting reports that Meghan had requested her name be changed from “Rachel Meghan” to “Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex.” The change, the spokesperson said, was actually one made by request of the royal institution.
“The change of name on public documents in 2019 was dictated by The Palace, as confirmed by documents from senior Palace officials,” the spokesperson said. “This was not requested by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex nor by The Duke of Sussex. To see this U.K. tabloid and their carnival of so-called ‘experts’ chose to deceptively whip this into a calculated family ‘snub’ and suggest that she would oddly want to be nameless on her child’s birth certificate, or any other legal document, would be laughable were it not offensive. There’s a lot going on in the world; let’s focus on that rather than creating clickbait.”
