Why Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, and Barbie Ferreira Are Making Me Reevaluate The Mullet
A new year brings with it the requisite bargaining over what I'm reforming in the hair department. Do I go blonde? Get bangs? Admit defeat and embrace the mess? Alas, 2020 is the year that an unexpected "All of the above" option prevails. The mullet is back, begging the question: Is "Achy Breaky Heart" now a work of art?
It makes sense that a new decade would usher in an "It" style that skews towards the risk-taker in us all. Perhaps you've absorbed the news that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are making moves and want to follow suit? Luckily, the "business in the front, party in the back" aesthetic previously reserved for country stars and metalheads is now sported by the likes of Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, and Euphoria’s Barbie Ferreira. Stigmatize this style no more, they've declared.

The mullet trend has even inexplicably hit me where I live. Somehow, I've moved from never imagining my head and the style in the same universe to lunging for a pair of shears and a photo of Joan Jett. The hairstyle, cut short at the front and sides but left long in the back, lends itself to a sense of playfulness and rebellion.
That sense of bucking tradition inspired Ferreira's new cut, says Laurie Heaps, the celebrity hairstylist behind the 'do. She says Ferreira wanted "something piecey and Elf-like. Thus, the "modern mullet" was born. In some ways Heaps argues that a mullet is the great equalizer of all hairstyles. She emphasizes that any hair type can be adapted for the cut and maintenance requires only a travel-size flat iron and texturing spray.

That's it. I'm temporarily sold. And is there a better way to honor David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, the king of the mullet, during his birthday month?
