Why the most flattering eyeshadow shade for women over 40 may surprise you
I don’t think I’m alone in saying that it’s far easier to get on board with a pop of lipstick than an eyeshadow. I am usually a taupe or beige kinda girl when I do wear shadow (and with my hooded lids, I often opt for none at all). A smoky eye just seems all a bit too... messy. But in the pursuit of variety with my make-up, I’ve ventured out of my cosmetic-comfort zone and tried a variety of colours on my lids.
One thing I’ve found is how universally flattering and modern a pink, coral or orange is – it seems to suit every skin tone and age, looking both fresh and modern. There are some great palettes on the market that contain a variety of brilliant colours. My favourite, although admittedly expensive, is the Mothership II: Sublime Palette by Pat McGrath Labs. It’s £93. But for that price you get 10 incredible eyeshadows in a selection of timeless shades, ranging from a soft and pretty pink to a bold pearlescent orange (my favourite) and a daring emerald green. The colour pay-off is amazing and it stays put all day.
Almost as good is the Modern Renaissance Eye Shadow Palette by Anastasia Beverly Hills. Yes, it’s one of the favourite brands of the Kardashians, but don’t let that put you off. The soft tangerine, pink and caramel shades are beautiful and leave a light sheen rather than a glittery finish. At £43 for 14 shades, it’s great value for a palette that will last for years and suit all occasions.
In terms of application, I love just a light wash of a single colour on the lids, finished with a slick of black mascara. It’s enough of a pop on the face without looking overdone. Best of all? You can apply any of these with your ring finger, from the lash line to the crease – minimum effort, maximum results.
