  • Prince Harry initiated the Sussexes' separation from the royal family.

  • A new insider says that Harry was the one who wanted to step down from his senior role in the royal family.

It's been one year since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shocked the world with their decision to step down from their senior roles in the royal family. They essentially "quit" being royals in favor of living a more normal life in America. The narrative up until now has been that it was Meghan who (understandably) wanted to leave the United Kingdom and her royal duties behind. But, we all had it wrong—it was Harry's idea all along.

"It came to the point where he wanted a different way of life," an insider explained to Vanity Fair. "Meghan was simply the catalyst." Also! Meghan and Harry didn't plan to release a surprise announcement on the 'gram either. "Harry and Meghan had put a great deal of thought into trying to create something that would work for both sides, but that was all blown when their plans were leaked to the press," royal historian Robert Lacey explained.

Whew, and you thought your life had drama. "Harry was trying to get Charles, William, and the queen to approve a plan, which they wanted in writing. Harry wanted to talk face-to-face because he was worried it would leak," Robert continued. "Reluctantly, he did put it in writing, it did leak, and that led to the Sussexes making the announcement."

Even though the news didn't release the way they planned, they seem much happier now. They recently moved to Montecito, Calif., are neighbors with Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, have partnered with Spotify, and are trying for another baby. Finding Freedom author Omid Scobie told Vanity Fair, "They’ve proved that they can master the challenge when it comes their way." He added, "When you look at everything they’ve faced, nothing has gone to plan but they’ve remained positive and it’s the support they give each other that gets them through."
