Why Suzanne Somers Turned Down Hosting 'The View'

Suzanne Somers turned down co-hosting The View—and she had a good reason for it.

The Three's Company alum appeared on the Behind the Velvet Rope podcast, where she revealed to host David Yontef that she was asked to be part of the original lineup of The View, which included Barbara Walters, Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, and Debbie Matenopoulos.

"I turned it down and everyone said, 'Why would you turn it down? It's a national show,'" she recalled. "I said, 'First of all, I'd have to live in New York, I don't really want to live in New York. I like the weather down here. I like the vibe down here. I said, secondly, I don't do well vying for time.'"

She continued, "In The View, you have to interrupt, and butt in and butt out…it's just not my personality. So I walked away from that and I never looked back."

Yontef agreed that Somers would have to "fight" with people and "argue why they're wrong." The actress-turned-entrepreneur then confirmed that yes, it would be a terrible fit, saying the issue is that she has very "specific points of view."

Somers shared an anecdote of an argument she had with someone "very wealthy and well known" at a dinner party, where she challenged the person's views on bioidentical hormones, a subject she's written many books about. "If you get into my arena, I am very argumentative without having to win. I just want my point of view be known," said Somers.

The 76-year-old also noted that she loves when she gets to interview someone interesting, and would much rather listen than dominate the conversation, which isn't how things go on the show.

These days, The View is hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Ana Navarro.
