Why Taylor Swift Didn't Pose With Joe Alwyn on the Golden Globes Red Carpet

Taylor Swift's big night as a Golden Globes nominee began with her posing on the red carpet solo. Her boyfriend of three years, Joe Alwyn, was also at the ceremony but walked before her, alone.

This decision by the couple—to have Swift pose by herself on the carpet—is pretty typical for them. The two have never posed together at an event—and they had ample opportunity to last year. Alwyn was at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Oscars, and Swift only joined him off-camera at the after parties for the ceremonies. Swift and Alwyn were seen together inside the Golden Globes though, before Swift went out to pose for carpet photos. She's wearing an Etro dress:

Tonight, Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber's new original song for Cats, "Beautiful Ghosts," is nominated for Original Song - Motion Picture. Swift has been nominated for a Golden Globes twice before for tracks she contributed to motion picture soundtracks, but has never won.

Swift and Alwyn were last photographed together at the Cats premiere in New York City in December. While they didn't pose alongside each other on the red carpet, Alwyn held Swift's hand as they left the theater, and paparazzi caught the rare PDA moment.

Swift and Alwyn have both spoken about their decision to keep their relationship private, away from press interviews and camera lenses.

“I’ve learned that if I do [talk about my relationship with Alwyn], people think it’s up for discussion, and our relationship isn’t up for discussion,” she told The Guardian's reporter with a laugh this fall. “If you and I were having a glass of wine right now, we’d be talking about it—but it’s just that it goes out into the world. That’s where the boundary is, and that’s where my life has become manageable. I really want to keep it feeling manageable.”

Alwyn, meanwhile, got defensive last January when explaining why it's wrong to call him and Swift "strangely private" during an interview with Mr. Porter's The Journal magazine.

“I don’t think [we are] more than anyone else," he said. "I don’t think anyone you meet on the streets would just spill their guts out to you, therefore why should I? And then that is defined as being ‘strangely private.’ Fine. But I don’t think it is. I think it’s normal.”
