Why Zendaya Skipped the 2021 Golden Globes for ‘Malcolm & Marie’
“This is fine...but it’d be better with Zendaya.” — the internet at large after noticing the absence of the one and only multi-hyphenate Zendaya at the 2021 Golden Globes
While the actress was eligible for awards at this show for playing Marie Jones in the Netflix drama/romance Malcolm & Marie alongside John David Washington, she wasn’t a 2021 Golden Globes attendee, to the great disappointment of fashion lovers everywhere. (Imagine the look she would have worn! ??)
Rest assured that Zendaya didn’t lose her invitation though. This one is actually the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA)’s doing. The HFPA didn’t nominate Zendaya for Malcolm & Marie, meaning the 24 year old didn’t actually have a reason to attend the Globes. (And JFYI, she wasn’t eligible this year for her role as Rue in Euphoria.)
In the past, Zendaya has promptly attended shows that have chosen to acknowledge her work. The actress became the youngest ever winner of the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series Emmy Award just a few months ago, beating out Jodie Comer for Killing Eve, Sandra Oh for Killing Eve, Olivia Colman for The Crown, Laura Linney for Ozark, and Jennifer Aniston for The Morning Show.
“I know this feels like a really weird time to be celebrating, but I just want to say that there is hope in the young people out there,” she said during her acceptance speech. “I know that our TV show doesn’t always feel like a great example of that but there is hope in the young people. And I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets: I see you, I admire you, I thank you, and yeah, thank you so, so much! This is—whoa, okay, thank you!”
Notably, Zendaya won the Emmy for playing Rue in season 1 of Euphoria after also being overlooked by the HFPA during the 2020 Golden Globes. Maybe next season’s the charm?
