Wickwood Inn of Saugatuck named third best B&B in U.S.

SAUGATUCK — A recently remodeled bed and breakfast in Saugatuck has earned admirers across the country.

That's according to a new list from USA Today's 10Best — released Wednesday, Aug. 14 — in which the Wickwood Inn was named the third best B&B in the U.S. by voters.

USAT's Readers' Choice Awards highlight the best in travel, food and drink, and lifestyle, according to a release.

The Wickwood Inn, located in Saugatuck's downtown historic district, celebrated its first season with new owners and significant renovations in 2022. The business on Butler Street was built in 1937 as the family home of then-mayor Frank Wicks.

Sue and Stub Louis of Kalamazoo later renovated and expanded the home, opening Wickwood Inn in 1981. The B&B was purchased by Julee Rosso and Ben Miller, neighbors of the Louis family, a decade later.

Rosso and Miller sold Wickwood to Shea Soucie and Martin Horner — founders of Chicago-based interior design firm Soucie Horner — 2021. The pair has dreamed of owning an inn since childhood.

The business closed in December 2021 for renovations. Bedrooms and bathrooms, according to management, are different than before. The estate includes two large suites and two junior suites, each with a separate sitting area, and seven general rooms.

The Wickwood Inn finished ahead of B&Bs in places like Elk, California; Bloomington, Illinois; and Chicago. It came in behind The Winchester Inn in Ashland, Oregon, and The Welsh Hills Inn in Granville, Ohio.

"Wickwood Inn offers a serene waterside setting in Michigan," USA Today wrote. "Without having to make the jaunt to the Upper Peninsula. In addition to the seasonally inspired breakfast, guests can also enjoy locally sourced charcuterie in the evenings."
