Winona Ryder admitted she was bullied at school for being in “Beetlejuice”
Back in the ’90s, we thought she had it all. But even Winona Ryder was bullied at school after taking on a few blockbuster roles. While it’s a shame that it happened, we’re glad that Ryder has risen above the cruel comments and opened up about it. Bullying, whether in person or online, is something we wish would end for good.
Ryder took a noticeable break from acting for quite some time, but we were happy to see her back as Joyce Byers on Stranger Things. Her role? The mom who wouldn’t give up on finding her son — despite how it looked to those around her.
In an interview with Marie Claire, Ryder admitted that the time back in the spotlight has been a little “overwhelming,” likely because she’s been a bit out of the loop. Aside from the hiatus, Ryder’s big roles happened when she was young — she was just seventeen when she appeared in Beetlejuice as the iconic character of Lydia.
“I remember thinking, ‘Ooh, [Beetlejuice] is like the number-one movie. This is going to make things great at school,'” she said. “But it made things worse. They called me a witch.”
Lucky for us, that didn’t stop Ryder. Heathers was released soon after, and a few years later, she landed a role in Edward Scissorhands.
At that point, she had already graduated from Petaluma High School, reportedly with an impressive 4.0 GPA, proving that she’s pretty much unstoppable.
This isn’t the first time that Ryder opened up about bullying. Back in 2013, the actress mentioned that she got picked on quite often for her short hair, which was inspired by the film Bugsy Malone. If only she knew back then that she was way ahead of the trend.
