Wisconsin city wants to fine parents if their kids are bullies
Parents in Wisconsin may soon be held accountable for their children’s actions, after a city official proposed that parents get fined if their kid is bullying other students.
According to local news outlet WISC/CNN, Sun Prairie Alder Maureen Combie is calling on the city to consider fining the parents of bullies anywhere from $50 to $1,000, after other parents have asked for more accountability for adults. The ordinance would include verbal, physical and electronic harassment.
The nearby city of Monona enacted a similar law in 2013 after experiencing a growing concern about bullying. At the time, Monona Police Chief Wally Ostrenga told the Wisconsin State Journal that the parent-liability clause will be used sparingly, if at all. Instead, he believed that the threat of a ticket would be enough to keep parents from being uncooperative in cases of bullying.
Combie didn’t respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment. However, she echoed the sentiment with WISC/CNN, saying, “It’s basically just another tool in the toolbox.”
The proposal is set to be brought up in the city’s Youth and Family Commission next Thursday.
