Woman brought to tears by 84-year-old man's thank you note: 'I shall always remember your kindness'
A woman who performed an act of kindness was moved by the letter of appreciation she received from the 84-year-old man she helped at a supermarket.
Sonya MacMillan, an art teacher and a waitress from Nashua, New Hampshire, was checking out at a Market Basket supermarket when she noticed the man behind her was flustered.
“He was like ‘Oh my god I don’t have my wallet’ as I was cashing out with my groceries,” she told Boston news station WBZ-TV. “I was like ‘Oh you don’t have a lot you can just go on mine and I’ll pay for you.'”
The man insisted that MacMillan give him her name and address so he could pay her back. While she wasn’t expecting him to send anything in return, McMillan told the news outlet she received a check for $15 and a heartfelt note.
The letter, in part, read, “You saved me a lot of trouble my wife was ill and I wanted to get back to her. I’m not very young anymore 84-years-old and it’s not a surprise I left my wallet at home. I shall always remember your kindness.”
MacMillan said she’s glad that she could make a difference in someone else’s life.
“[The letter] definitely brought tears to my eyes because of what he was going through at the time. You never really think about what’s going on in someone else’s life,” she said. “For me to do something for him when he’s going through a hardship at home with his wife being sick, I just felt really good about it.”
MacMillan does not plan to cash his check.
“I have something that I look at every morning when I leave my room. It says ‘Be the reason that someone smiles today,’ so I see that when I leave my house. That was what I could do to make him smile that day,” MacMillan told the outlet.
