Woman Has Been Dealing with Pelvic Organ Prolapse for 10 Years

Anita has come to The Doctors to bravely speak about the pelvic organ prolapse that she has been dealing with for 10 years.

She explains that she has a protrusion which she says is the "size of a large pear." In addition to bleeding, she says it is hard for her to urinate and walk. She also reveals that she has not been intimate with her husband for the last 10 years because of the issue.

OB/GYN Dr. Nita Landry says over 3 million women suffer from this. She explains this can occur as a result of childbirth, chronic constipation, heavy coughing, heavy lifting, and also sometimes it can occur as we age. She says in many cases people are unaware of the issue, but in some extreme cases, the uterus can be seen coming out of the vaginal opening.

Anita's granddaughter Onica wrote to The Doctors after seeing how much pain the pelvic organ prolapse was casuing her.

Dr. Nita explains there are treatment options available ranging from pelvic physical therapy, a removable device inserted into the vagina which helps to hold the organs in place, and in severe cases, surgery may be required.

The Doctors surprise Anita with the news that Dr. Mickey Karram, the Director of Gynecological Surgery at The Roxbury Institute, has offered to treat her pelvic organ prolapse at no cost to her.
