A woman purchased a birthday cake for a total stranger last week, a year after suffering her own personal tragedy. Nick DeClemente, who works at a Publix supermarket in Jacksonville, Fla., wrote about his experience witnessing the customer’s act of kindness.

“A lady just came up to the bakery counter and asked if we had any first birthday cakes on order for Saturday or Sunday,” DeClemente wrote in a Facebook post. “She said she wanted to pay for one.”

DeClemente asked for a name for the cake, thinking she wanted to pay for a specific person’s order, but the woman explained that she simply wanted to pay for one anonymously.

“She then started to tear up and tell me that she had a stillborn child a year ago and in tribute to him she wanted to pay for someone else’s cake,” he wrote.

He showed her an order form for a custom Sesame Street “smash cake” for a 1-year-old named David, and a receipt shows the woman paid $32.99 for it.

“She told me thank you and appreciated that I let her do this,” DeClemente wrote. “It was probably one of the most touching things I’ve seen in all my years working in retail. I hope that this lady finds peace through this tribute and that the customer receiving this gift will, if nothing else, pay it forward.”

Many people have been moved by the woman’s gesture of kindness.

“What a beautiful thing for her to do through her pain and sorrow,” one man wrote. Another added that DeClemente’s story was “amazing.”
