Woman praises man who returned an American flag to her home properly folded: 'I am honored that you know flag etiquette'
Surveillance footage from outside a home in Tennessee is going viral for an unexpected reason after a stranger approached a family’s front door to return an American flag.
Erin Fezell took to her Facebook page to share the video of a man who recovered her family’s flag after winds had blown it off of the pole. In the footage, he is seen walking up to her front door with the flag perfectly folded in hand. But he doesn’t stop there in his effort to return it in a proper manner. Instead, he makes sure not to let it touch the ground again by pulling over a chair and setting them both up right in front of the door.
“I’m in awe of this gentleman,” Fezell wrote about the man, who has since been identified as her neighbor’s 22-year-old nephew, Nicholas Dunn. “You’re a remarkable human and I am honored that you know flag etiquette (better than I do).”
As it turns out, Dunn learned all about proper etiquette during his training for the National Guard — a detail that touched Fezell, whose father was in the Navy. She didn’t immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment. However, she told Nashville news station WTVF about why the gesture meant so much to her.
“It’s amazing to see somebody that takes that much pride in a flag. I mean, most of us nowadays don’t know the proper etiquette of what to do even if a flag were to touch the ground or a flag were to be damaged,” she explained. “So to see somebody within such a young generation to know to put it the way that he did and to care for the flag the way that he did — it brought a sense of pride.”
And her Facebook friends agree. The video, which has received over 24,000 views, has also picked up hundreds of comments from people who are touched by the young man’s display of patriotism.
“This is amazing makes my heart so happy to see people still care about the flag and what it stands for,” one person wrote. Another said, “So much good still in this world.”
Others are simply happy that for once during the holiday season, this surveillance footage wasn’t capturing a porch package poacher.
