Woman seeking relationship advice says her husband is pretending their house is haunted
People seeking relationship advice is nothing new. The Athenian Mercury is credited as the first advice column, and that was published back in 1690. Sometimes, it helps to get an outside perspective.
One 26-year-old woman posted on Reddit’s r/relationships that her 27-year-old husband is trying to convince her that their house is haunted. But she says she has proof that it is not — and this ruse has been going on for about two weeks.
The anonymous woman writes that she woke up one night to her husband, whom she has been happily married to for two years, screaming in another part of the house at 3 a.m.
“I was frightened so I stayed in bed and yelled out his name,” she wrote. “He came running into the bedroom with a wild look in his eyes and he told me that he saw a glass raise 2 feet off the counter and be thrown to the ground.”
The woman believed her husband and agreed to stay in a hotel for the night. A week later, however, the woman heard her husband get out of his bed. He opened the fridge, and then yelled again. “I ran to the kitchen this time and he hysterically began to tell me that he just witnessed our sinks faucet turn on and off.” Except, in their small one-bed, one-bath house, she feels there’s no way that she wouldn’t be able to hear even a trickle of water.
“The final straw happened last night when I awoke yet again to my husband getting out of bed,” she wrote. “I set up my phone in the living room facing the kitchen and set it to record. I made my way back to our room and after my husband finished using the restroom he made his way to the kitchen. As you can guess he yelled out and ran into our room this time.”
When she rewatched the footage, she saw her husband walking around the kitchen for 30 seconds until he opened and closed the cupboard door himself and ran into the bedroom screaming.
Others in the comment section were properly perplexed by this man’s actions as well.
Some suggested that maybe he didn’t know how to tell his wife that he wanted to move. Others believe that there might be a gas leak or a very bizarre joke.
One user, rosepetalmemories, advises, “Sit him down, show him the video and then let him talk. Don’t say anything and just let him talk.”
One commenter was concerned this was gaslighting, a form of emotional abuse. “Bingo. I’d be looking up emotional abuse/narcissism/psychopathic behavior. Trust me, they hide out for a very long time,” another agreed.
“Some people get such a kick out of controlling others and manipulating their emotions,” Odaijin1 wrote. “My mom was gleeful; she could turn on her kids’ fear like a faucet. Sometimes there’s an endgame — cowed people are easier to control — but sometimes it’s the mere joy of sadism.”
It sounds like this woman needs to either invest in some sage to burn or a couple’s counselor.
