Woman straps 5-month-old daughter to her body to wait tables during snowstorm
A video of a 22-year-old mom in Greensboro, N.C., working a restaurant shift during a snowstorm with her nearly 5-month-old daughter strapped to her chest has gone viral.
Tate Edwards and her boyfriend, Patrick Roby, are parents to infant Eleanor. Roby is the general manager at M’Coul’s Public House, which the couple have come to call their second home. So when the area was hit by a severe snowstorm on Sunday that made the restaurant’s owner, Simonne Ritchy McClinton, worried about employees making their way into work, Edwards and Roby volunteered to work the shift and had baby Eleanor in tow.
“Simonne offered to pick us up and bring us home whenever we were ready. We absolutely did not have to be there. No one forced us to come in, and we could have gone home whenever we were all ready. Really whenever Eleanor was ready,” Edwards explains to Yahoo Lifestyle. “We are definitely on baby time now. We pretty much do everything as a family now.”
So much so that while Roby was working behind the bar, the new mom says that she and Eleanor took the shift waiting tables together.
“We had a lot of help though. The owner and her daughter spent a lot of the day watching and helping out with Eleanor,” she says, adding that there is even a dedicated space filled with toys in Ritchy McClinton’s office for Eleanor. “She spends a lot of time with Eleanor, and her daughter helps out too, whenever she’s not in school. Bringing her along with us wasn’t a difficult decision.”
The decision also seemed to pay off for patrons whose smiles were a bit brighter that day, in addition to thousands of people across the country after Greensboro news station WFMY-TV posted a video of the mother-daughter duo waiting tables.
Most comments on the now-viral video were positive, including, “Only been there once, and the food was good. This however makes the place awesome!!” and “What a great place to work.”
One person, however, was focused on the concern that the working mom may have felt forced or pressured to come in despite the inclement weather, writing, “Draft beers and bar food can definitely wait.” Edwards quickly clarified that there was no expectation.
“We didn’t have to be there; we wanted to be there. It’s such a magical place, surrounded by the best people,” she says. “We are so fortunate to be in a position that allows us to make it work. Simonne takes such good care of us.”
The mom also took time to bring Eleanor outside to play in the snow with all of the people who love her most.
“It truly is a family business,” Edwards says. “We were all in it together as one big family.”
