Woman's intense reaction after winning $11.30 in trivia game goes viral
You might have spent your holiday oceanside, or hitting the slopes. Or you might have spent it in your house, on the couch with family and friends. But regardless of where you were, you probably played HQ Trivia.
The popular mobile game that goes live twice a day at 3:00 and 9:00 PM EST has audiences of nearly 400,000 players per each 12-question round. With the incentive of winning a real cash prize, the game quickly gets participants hooked. And Philadelphia, Penn.-native Lauren May is a perfect example of somebody who’s already become a devoted player.
“I started playing a month ago with my friends and played with my entire family over Christmas,” May tells Yahoo Lifestyle, after recently going viral for the reaction she had after winning a round of HQ Trivia. The moment was so good that her friends got it on camera and posted the video to Twitter. But her tearful reaction will likely make you think she won the lottery, rather than a small cash prize.
Watching Lauren May’s roller coaster of emotions as she realized she’s won $11.30 playing @hqtrivia yesterday was a truly epic start to the new year @ScottRogowsky @L_M_A_Y @megmk #HQTrivia pic.twitter.com/GtH4nCG2w7

“I think once my friends saw me crying when they thought I lost, they knew it would be a good idea to film,” May explains. “Though always genuine, my reactions to most things are ridiculous. We only got one life to live — gotta enjoy it and ham it up! But yes, I’m obviously mortified this video is going viral.”
The rest of Twitte, however, are more than happy about the viral nature of the video, which accurately represents just how serious HQ Trivia users take any victory — even if it is just $11.30.

This would be me winning HQ even if I won 11 cents https://t.co/GuUc7QtKs9

At this point I’m not even in it for the money I just want to be able to say I made it to the 12th question https://t.co/2MLMhr9jyZ

Beyond the excitement of winning the game, May had another moment of happy tears sparked by HQ Trivia host Scott Rogowsky. The man who May calls “a celebrity in his own right” tweeted in response to her victory video naming her ‘HQtie’ of the year.
2018 is young, but I'm ready to crown this woman HQtie of the Year. https://t.co/mH9ZySS5JH

And again, a hilarious Twitter thread took place between the two, until May’s friend posted another reaction video.

“We flew back to San Francisco and my roommate came barreling into my room to tell me the news,” May says of the way she found out about Rogowsky’s tweet. “I was so overwhelmed with emotion, and so exhausted, that I started crying again. It’s the biggest honor I could ever have imagined.”
So far, it seems like May has had a pretty epic experience playing HQ Trivia. And although she plans to continue playing, she doesn’t expect another win.
“I’d love to say I’ll do something cool with those $11, but let’s be honest, I’ll most likely spend them at Starbucks,” she says. “Holler at me Sbucks if you need an influencer, I’m famous now.”
